Job summary

Acorns Childrens Hospice Trust are looking for a Matron for our Birmingham Hospice to provide expert leadership to the hospice care team and be accountable for the delivery of high-quality care, uphold professional standards and provide assurance to families and the organisation.

About the Role

As Matron, you will be an active member of our Care Senior Leadership Team and accountable for the delivery of high-quality care within the hospice. Youll work with your Deputy Matron and use your expert decision making and clinical judgement to uphold professional standards, develop the team and provide assurance to families and the organisation.

The Matron, as the Registered Manager, will be highly visible, accessible and have an authoritative presence within the hospices clinical areas, to which children and their families and others can turn for assistance, advice and support.

Main duties of the job

The Matrons role will focus on:

  • Improving clinical care standards in conjunction with the Senior Care Team
  • Ensuring best practice in infection control is undertaken in all defined clinical areas.
  • Ensure safe staffing levels are maintained and the workforce objectives are reviewed, and actions taken to maintain these.
  • Work in conjunction with the Senior Care Team to have oversight of off duty schedules across sites.
  • Being responsible, in conjunction with the Care SLT Leads and Care ED, for the delivery and implementation of local and national initiatives.
  • Providing leadership to the professional and direct care teams across all clinical areas.
  • Ensuring that senior nursing teams are empowered and enabled to enhance service delivery. Using evidence-based practice/techniques to highlight that the above roles are delivering an increased quality in the delivery of care.

1. Demonstrate a compassionate inclusive leadership culture across services adapting style to suit individual team members to create the right environment for success, leading a team/individuals to overcome obstacles and barriers to promote effective team working within Care and the wider organisation and leading as a proactive member of the Hospice Management Team.

5. Implement local systems and processes to ensure high quality care is delivered through the emergency care pathways, including at times of high demand leading the team to effectively and dynamically maximise use of the establishment to meet the needs of children and families.

6. Provide active people management in collaboration with the Senior Care Leadership Team to oversee the recruitment and retention of an effective workforce, manage absence and support employee development and progression.

7. Provide disciplinary support and performance management to ensure safe and quality care delivered by an engaged workforce.

8. In line with Acorns commitment as a UNICEF rights Respecting Organisation, ensure the services are child centered, respectful and inclusive delivered by a proactive team committed to high quality care and by being a duty bearer of those childrens rights.

9. Adopt a curious mindset to make decisions and give clear recommendations based upon a range of relevant information with a view to increasing efficiency and effectiveness in partnership with the Senior Care Leadership Team

10. Work flexibly to include participation in the 24-hour management and clinical support in conjunction with the other Senior Care Leadership Team members as part of an On-Call Rota.

11. Take responsibility for ensuring good communication is maintained within the organisation at all times using the appropriate channels.

12. Openly share knowledge and expertise to allow others to learn and grow.

13. Provide reports, statistics and written information as requested making effective use of digital solutions provided.

1. Actively promote high-quality clinical practice through role modelling, celebrating excellence in care and challenging practice that doesnt meet our exacting standards within the scope of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct.

2. Safeguard all children and young people accessing services; by responding to concerns raised in a timely and appropriate manner and effectively escalating these in accordance with policies and procedures.

  • Extensive experience of paediatric nursing.
