Job summary

As a Clinical Support Worker, youll deliver day to day care to meet the clinical needs of our children and young people, either in their home or other care premises, reporting and recording any changes in need. Youll facilitate play and activity that is appropriate to age and development needs and provide parents and carers with an emotional base of support when caring for their child in their home.

Youll work independently or alongside other workers from the Acorns team, such as one of our nurses.

Main duties of the job

You will have previous experience in general childcare, hospital or physical care of children or young people. Youll have a Health and Social Care diploma, NNEB or NVQ level 2 (or above or equivalent) and knowledge of safeguarding is essential.

Were open every day of the year and are fully responsive to the needs of our children and young people, so we will ask for some flexibility as there will be day and weekend shifts. As this is an outreach role, you must have the ability to travel independently across the West Midlands.

Job responsibilities

Primary Tasks

1. Child and Family Care

a) Deliver day to day care as detailed in the care plan to a safe and consistent standard, working within assessed and delegated competencies to meet the clinical care needs of the child or young person.

b) Assist a registered nurse by reporting and recording any changes in the clinical care needs of the child / young person when in the designated outreach environment.

c) Lone and joint working - to work independently in the child or young persons designated outreach environment, on a lone worker basis or alongside other workers from the Acorns team.

d) Facilitate play and activity in the home that is appropriate to age and development needs of the child/young person, taking into account their medical complexities.

e) Providing parent/carers with an emotional base of support when caring for their child in their home.

f) Adhere to Acorns policies and maintain an awareness of new and developing care options.

g) Every member of staff has a professional responsibility to maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of issues required to deliver quality care at the end of life.

h) Every member of staff has a professional responsibility to maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of issues around the safeguarding of children and young people , and to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to protect children and young people, facilitated through effective communication across multidisciplinary agencies.

i) Every staff member has a responsibility to maintain confidential, accurate and timely records.

j) Maintain the required computer skills to use technology based solutions to facilitate effective communication and record keeping.

k) Maintain an awareness of the diversity of families supported by Acorns and ensure that the cultural needs of the children, young people and families are met appropriately.

l) Ensure professional boundaries are maintained and that due attention is paid to confidentiality, privacy and dignity at all times.

2. Professional Development

a) Actively participate in projects to develop service provision.

b) Undertake annual competency updates to maintain delegated clinical skills. Take advantage of training opportunities to further develop your skills and expertise to enhance your role within the Acorns Care Team including mandatory training sessions.

c) Access clinical supervision as and when required.

3. Management and Team Awareness

a) Support the Outreach Lead at Acorns as required.

b) Actively guide and supervise volunteer work with children/ young people.

c) Inform the relevant line manager / on call of incidents and concerns using agreed processes.

d) Participate in the induction of new staff and volunteers as and when required.

4. Communication

a) Encourage the philosophy of Acorns and present a good public image.

b) Liaise closely with the professionals and volunteers working with the child/ young person and family to ensure a seamless service.

c) Attend staff meetings and team briefings and participate in other meetings as appropriate (including external meetings)

5. Health and Safety

a) Ensure that infection control guidelines and policies are strictly adhered to.

b) Undertake risk assessments and manage risk to ensure that clients, families, visitors and colleagues are safe.

c) Be aware of and work within the lone working policies of the organisation.

d Maintain the Health & Safety Regulations of Acorns Childrens Hospice Trust including Fire Regulations within the Acorns buildings.

Other Duties

a) To act as an ambassador for Acorns raising awareness of its charitable aims and objectives and enhancing its reputation through exemplary behaviour, conduct and team working.

b) To put the needs and interests of Acorns children and young people and their families first in all aspects of their work.

c) To ensure compliance with Acorns policies for diversity, employment, equal opportunities, health and safety, information governance and safeguarding.

d) To actively participate in an annual Individual Performance Review and any training and development identified to further enhance your role with Acorns.

e) To be innovative, commit to continuous learning, researching new ideas, monitoring new technology advancements, sharing good practice across the team and colleagues.

f) To be familiar with the Health and Safety and Fire policies for the organisation and to attend mandatory updates where required
