Job summary

The post would suit someone wishing to pursue a career or gain experience in this professionally rewarding speciality, or a GP looking to develop a portfolio career or considering a complete change of speciality

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Doctor to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be capable of delivering high quality patient care ideally with relevant experience/qualifications in Palliative Care or Oncology. Candidates should be enthusiastic about delivering the highest quality palliative care, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have a flexible adaptable approach with the ability to participate in the on-call and weekend rota.

Main duties of the job

Provide clinical care and supervision of patients in the Inpatient Unit and Day Therapy as required

Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and contemporaneous medical and multi professional records

Ensure safe and effective prescribing following guidelines. To support the regular audit of prescribing and contribute to the review of prescribing guidelines

Meet with families and carers as required

Ensure effective communication with the patient, their family and the wider teams

Contribute to the clinical supervision and training of junior medical staff

Conduct a daily ward round with the senior nurse when on call at weekend

Participate in daily clinical handover and review

Provide clinical advice by telephone to other healthcare professionals

Participate in the on call rota

Participate in any future developments involving cross-boundary working e.g., into the community or the hospital.

Participate in clinical supervision

Take an active part in the specialist palliative care service education programme

Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate medical students and junior doctors

Take an active part in audit and attend regional and hospice audit meetings

Co-operate with staff and management in contributing to the responsible and efficient running of services

Assisting in ensuring that clinical administration is kept up to date

Participating in hospice and community meetings where appropriate

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION/ LEARNING/DEVELOPMENT

To take an active part in the specialist palliative care service education programme

To maintain and develop skills in Palliative Medicine by participating in CME and maintaining an appropriate portfolio of evidence

To maintain CPD

Share skills and knowledge with others to assist in their professional development

Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate medical students and junior doctors

Undertake annual appraisal with designated appraiser and meet requirements for 5 yearly revalidations

Attend and complete hospice mandatory training on an annual basis

Positive contribution to raising the profile of the work of the Hospice locally and nationally including co-operating with fundraising and the charitable aims of the organisation

AUDIT/ RESEARCH

To take an active part in audit and attend regional and hospice audit meetings

To encourage and support approved research projects

Where appropriate to become actively involved in research projects under the guidance of the Medical Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To act as a core member of the Specialist Palliative Care MDT for Halton.

Co-operate with staff and management in contributing to the responsible and efficient running of services

Assisting in ensuring that clinical administration is kept up to date

Participating in hospice and community meetings where appropriate

Covering of medical colleagues where possible during periods of absences

To adhere to clinical and management governance policies and procedures in all work settings.

To follow all applicable rules and procedures relating to health and safety and universal precautions

Be aware of obligations and statutory rights with regards to disciplinary and grievance procedure

Undertake other duties required within the post which may necessitate helping other departments/ teams

Complete mandatory training where it is applicable to the role in all settings

Maintain full registration with General Medical Council

Maintain fully subscribed membership of a recognised medical defence organisation

Maintain business car insurance
