Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Leader. The post-holder will be responsible for overseeing, co-ordinating and delivering a full range of interventions to people who use substances. With the support of three Senior Nurses, they will manage a team of 8 Nurses, 4 Health Care Assistants and a clinical administrator. They will provide direct line management support for the 3 Senior Nurses and the Administrator.

They will support the Organisational Clinical Lead so that all services are delivered in line with Kaleidoscope Operational Policies and procedures, ensuring that interventions are safe, undertaken to a high standard and informed by up-to-date practice.

The post holder will ensure that quality services are delivered to substance using service users, ensuring that high professional standards are maintained, output targets achieved, and that the service works within established administrative and reporting procedures.

Main duties of the job

This is a varied role where you work closely with a range of stakeholders; from service users to Commissioners.

Background and service:

The Dyfodol Service is a South Wales wide service offering support for people involved in the criminal justice system and people who maybe homeless. Kaleidoscope provide this service with our partners G4S.

As a member of our Dyfodol team, you will play a critical role in enabling people with complex and problematic substance use histories to build positive futures and healthy lifestyles and focus on moving into active recovery. Your main focus will be overseeing Clinical services include substitute prescribing for opiate dependence, harm reduction initiatives including the provision of take-home Naloxone; family planning and sexual health screening; Blood Borne Virus testing and referral on to specialist support.

Service users will be offered a full range of support to assist them in overcoming their substance use. Treatment will be individualised via personal recovery care planning and regular clinical assessment and reviews, and will seek to support service users to address their substance use as well as to raise motivation to address wider social and health issues.

Substance Misuse Nurses will deliver services in line with Welsh Government Treatment Frameworks, NICE guidance (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), and other relevant professional standards and legislation. Kaleidoscope staff are expected to follow Operational Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring that the care and treatment provided is safe, undertaken to a high standard and informed by up-to-date, evidence-based practice.

The post holder should enjoy face-to-face contact with people who have recognised that their use of substances has become problematic. They will have excellent communication skills, be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, across agency cultures including those within statutory, private and voluntary sector partnerships. The post holder must be flexible and efficient within small locality teams, to ensure services are delivered equitably and with the service user at the heart of delivery.

Individual supervision will be provided six weekly in line with Kaleidoscope policy. Additional clinical support will be provided via peer supervision and review groups. Specific training will be available for the development of service provision in line with Continued Professional Development.

This will include providing supervision, appraisals and ensuring staff work to their stated contract.

  • The post holder should therefore be committed to evidence-based practice, sound clinical governance and continual improvement, and have a desire to firmly embed these principles within the team.
  • They will have strong management skills, and an ability to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Provide operational leadership which translates the strategic direction of the Service Level Agreement into high quality service delivery for individuals accessing services.
  • Implement robust systems for reporting any untoward incidents, records of qualifications, accreditation and training, as well as supervision and Continuing Professional Development, complaints and positive feedback.
  • Ensure that the service operates and is developed in a way that encompasses and promotes partnership and supports a holistic, multi-agency approach to the complex needs of this service user group.
  • Plan and implement strategic changes to improve service delivery.
  • Collaboratively develop and implement effective and flexible clinical systems and structures.
  • Be responsible for performance management at the operational level, ensuring that services collect, collate, and report the required information and data; identify areas of under-performance and planning and implementing actions to improve performance.
  • Prepare and co-ordinate high quality written reports, and ensure that data recording and reporting requirements are fully met by the staff team.
  • Lead with staff recruitment and human resource issues within the service.
  • Co-ordinate the development of effective links with mental health, GP prescribing and other voluntary and statutory sector providers and agencies.
  • Lead with the implementation of Kaleidoscope clinical policies and South Wales regional procedures and protocols across the service, to ensure that safety and good practice are maintained for staff, other agencies and clients.
  • Lead with clinical audits, service reviews and the evaluation of service user satisfaction for the service.
  • Ensure case notes and other statutory records are up to date and kept in accordance with Kaleidoscope policies and procedures/regional information sharing protocols.
  • Work with the Finance Manager to set budgets and maintain finances within tight constraints.
  • Broker dispensing and supervised consumption with pharmacy partners and liaise with Community Pharmacies to ensure prescriptions are in place and monitored appropriately and in accordance with guidelines.
  • Attend and contribute to Area Planning Board Harm Reduction and Clinical Governance forums for regional delivery development.

  • Maintain and develop personal expertise and knowledge by reading, networking, and further training to develop professional competence and to contribute to the development of competence within the team.
  • Lead with the induction and orientation of new staff, volunteers, and students.
  • Ensure professional development by seeking regular supervision and annual appraisals.
  • Effectively manage own time and prioritise workload, maintaining own administration and accurate personal records regarding travel, diary appointments, TOIL, and expenses incurred.
  • Be accountable and responsible for own professional practice, operating in line with professional code of conduct and within organisational policy and procedures.
