Job summary

Applicants are now invited to apply for a consultant in paediatric palliative medicine (SPA) post, based at Martin House.

This post is suitable for a capable enthusiastic paediatric palliative consultant with full GMC registration who is keen to join a dynamic hospice based team. The successful applicant will be expected to work throughout the service for children and young adults- including providing paediatric palliative care in Martin House Hospice, the acute hospitals and in the community.

The successful applicant will participate in the specialist on-call rota (on-call supplement applies).

Every year we care for more than 420 families at our hospice in Boston Spa, in hospitals and in their own homes. We also support more than 150 bereaved families each year.

In relation to this post, we are looking for a compassionate individual to fill this exciting and challenging position, based at a childrens hospice, delivering specialist and holistic palliative care to children and young people (up to age 25) across North, West and East Yorkshire.

1. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

1.1 To deliver high quality palliative care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families, across Yorkshire and support the hospitals across the region in palliative care for children and young people. The post holder will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team and will be required to support the staff at Martin House Hospice, Andys Hospice and hospitals across the region. The consultant will help deliver teaching and training as well as delivering medical care to individual children and young people and supporting their families. The consultant will be providing complex symptom management, helping with ethical decision clinical decision making, advance care planning and providing end of life care and bereavement support. Close links between the hospice and childrens services have been developed to allow smooth transition of children and families from one service to another. Maintaining these links is seen as an important part of the post, along with identifying links with other services.

1.2 Provide clinical leadership for the geographical region for the delivery of high quality children and young peoples palliative care. This is delivered by maintaining close links with education, health and social care, including childrens community nursing teams, consultant paediatricians and GPs, and any other relevant partners involved in the care of children and young people with life-limiting conditions. Home visits, some as joint visits, are essential to provide support for families and care staff. The aim is to maintain a real choice of place of care between home, hospice and hospital. Excellent communication between families and all services is an essential part of ensuring children and young people receive high quality care.

1.3 To work with commissioners and providers of palliative care to ensure sustainable services.

1.4 Provide education and training in childrens palliative care at all levels. It is expected that the post holder will teach nurses, medical undergraduates, post graduate training of paediatricians and teaching to paediatric departments in the region.

1.5 Work on a national level to develop the specialty. The post holder is expected to be an active member of organisations such as the Association of Paediatric Palliative Medicine and Together for Short Lives.

1.6 Support research into childrens palliative care. It is expected that national links will provide opportunities to become involved into increasing the evidence base for children and young peoples palliative care.

1.7 Be an ambassador for Martin House Hospice in particular and children and young peoples palliative care in general.

1.8 Take an active part in supporting young people with life limiting conditions transition into adult services. This will involve the post holder providing medical support to young people up to the age of 25 years who attend Whitby Lodge. This is often with the support of adult physicians and general practice.

1.9 To support effective management and governance at Martin House by being an active member of the Clinical Leadership Team and Clinical Governance Team and contributing to service planning and delivery.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH), or equivalent.
  • CCT Paediatric Palliative Medicine or equivalent (or within 6 months of obtaining) (CESR applications must be on the specialist register at the point of application)Higher degree e.g. MSc/PhD relevant to the subspecialty
  • Diploma in paediatric palliative medicine
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work permanently in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
  • Must have completed a recognised training programme in paediatrics and paediatric palliative medicine.
  • Experience of adult palliative medicine in addition to paediatric palliative medicine Safeguarding Level 3
