Job summary

Springhill Hospice is a 16 bedded adult hospice providing the highest standard of physical, psychological and emotional care to our patients with life limiting illnesses and also to their families, friends and carers, in a safe, caring and holistic environment. Where possible, patients are encouraged to maintain independence and to make informed choices whilst protecting their privacy and dignity. We offer advice and support from the time of referral throughout the illness and into the bereavement period.

We respect all cultural religious and personal beliefs placing the emphasis of care on an Individual need basis.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Staff Nurses, preferably with previous experience of caring for patients with palliative care needs, to work as part of an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team in the Hospices Inpatient Unit and Hospice at Home service.

We encourage all our staff to develop their knowledge and gain new skills in order to enhance the care of and support given to patients.

Evidence of professional development is required. ENB 931 would be desirable or a willingness to undertake relevant courses.

The posts are subject to flexible rostering (annualised hours) and internal rotation to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

To ensure that the highest possible standards of nursing care are carried out in accordance with the policies and procedures of Springhill Hospice and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and

within the Nursing team.

About us

This role is based at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale.

Springhill Hospice providesthe following palliative care services to the local adult population who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminal illnesses:

A 16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.

Hospice at Home Service - supports people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.

A Day Therapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offering complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage); creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.

Community Service - provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes

A 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.

Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives, provided by a qualified therapist.

An Education Unit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health and social care professionals, with the main focus of training being on the Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport' (SPCEP) which ensures that core palliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Professional

1.1 Plan, implement and evaluate patient care using multidisciplinary approach following the Hospice philosophy, acting as Named Nurse for designated patients, both on the Hospice inpatient unit and in the patients own home.

1.2 Supervise professional work of other staff, where appropriate, and prioritise where necessary.

1.3 Deliver skilled, research based, individually planned nursing care to patients. Evaluate and document all care given, as laid down by Hospice and NMC policy.

1.4 Ensure patients and, where appropriate, relatives/carers are involved in the care planning process and ensure adherence to the Admissions/Discharge policies.

1.5 In accordance with the NMC Standards for Administration of Medicines and Springhill Hospice Drug Management Policies, undertake drug management procedures, ensuring correct record keeping.

1.6 Complete patient documentation in accordance with Hospice policy and the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.

1.7 Work closely with and liaise appropriately with the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of care to patients/relatives/carers.

1.8 Maintain a safe environment to patients, relatives, visitors and staff in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act.

1.9 Within the scope of professional practice and Hospice policies, perform role expansion duties, following appropriate training and assessment of competence.

1.10 Ensure that the correct policy for the care and custody of patients property/valuables is adhered to.

1.13 Deliver advice and support within the constraints of your own professional competency to patients, carers and healthcare professionals who call the 24 hour palliative care advice line. Advice given will be evidence-based and appropriate training ongoing.

Education

2.1 Supervise and contribute to the training and development of nursing and care staff and act as mentor to individual nurses on clinical placement.

2.2 Maintain a personal and professional portfolio, providing evidence of self-development and ensure PREP requirements are fully met.

2.3 Participate in individual performance review and personal development planning.

2.4 Attend mandatory training sessions as laid down by Springhill Hospice and access other appropriate educational training programmes as required.

2.5 Participate in clinical and organisational audit and be actively involved in research activity and demonstrate the ability to advance palliative care research.

3.2 To be aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, in relation to role.

3.6 Ensure your continued support and encouragement to colleagues within the nursing team and wider Hospice team at all times.

3.7 Participate in continuing education for personal progress and teaching of nursing staff, trained and untrained, and volunteers.

3.8 Ensure that all donations received for the Hospice are recorded and passed to appropriate personnel, and assist as required with fundraising.

3.9 On occasion represent the Hospice and receive donations at outside meetings/functions.

3.10 In the absence of senior nursing staff, deal appropriately with enquiries, concerns or complaints from patients, visitors, healthcare professionals or general public.

3.11 Maintain requirements of NMC registration.

3.12 Undertake any other duties as required and delegated by senior nursing staff.

3.13 Act at all times in a professional and competent manner, so enhancing the profession of Nursing and the reputation of Springhill Hospice to the general public.
