Springhill Hospice Counselling Service is a BACP Accredited Service. We provide counselling for adults who have a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, and for their loved ones. We also offer bereavement support and counselling for adults bereaved by the loss of someone with a life-limiting illness.

We are recruiting a manager to lead, develop and enhance our counselling/psychological service. This management position requires an experienced, BACP Accredited counsellor with extensive experience of counselling in palliative care and bereavement.

The successful candidate will hold a small caseload of complex cases and manage the service. You will lead a committed team of counsellors, spiritual and pastoral care coordinator, students and volunteers.

Main duties of the job

The Psychological Care Manager will promote the hospice commitments with people with life-limiting conditions, and their families/carers, during the duration of their illness and after the death of the patient.

The Psychological Care Manager is to enable appropriate and professional psychological, emotional and spiritual support to be given in a timely and responsive way to help alleviate psychological/emotional distress, when requested.

The Psychological Care Manager must retain a clear professional identity and awareness of their professional skills and expertise, to serve the best interests of the patient/client.

About us

This role is based at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale.

Springhill Hospice providesthe following palliative care services to the local adult population who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminal illnesses:

A 16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.

Hospice at Home Service - supports people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.

A Day Therapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offering complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage); creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.

Community Service - provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes

A 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.

Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives, provided by a qualified therapist.

An Education Unit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health and social care professionals, with the main focus of training being on the Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport' (SPCEP) which ensures that core palliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

The Psychological Care Manager will:

Professional
  1. Provide a range of counselling and supportive care across all areas where Hospice services exist.
  2. Maintain BACP Service Accreditation.
  3. Be accountable for their own clinical practice.
  4. Coordinate staff counselling and manage counsellors in private practice offering pro bono sessions.
  1. Maintain strict confidentiality in line with Hospice policy and the BACP.
  2. Maintain accurate and relevant written/computerised records as required by Springhill Hospice and in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.

ClinicalCounselling
  1. Work within the BACP Ethical Framework of the Counselling Professions (BACP).
  2. Maintain own arrangements for clinical supervision, bringing to the attention of the Director of Clinical Services at any time additional support may be required.
  3. Ensure appropriate information exists regarding the person referred prior to initial assessment.
  4. Respond within agreed timescales to all referrals as agreed with Springhill Hospice Multidisciplinary team.
  5. Assess the appropriateness of counselling for an individual referred, referring on to another source if necessary.
  6. Undertake adequate risk assessment of each individual client, seeking advice, support or referral on to alternative professionals if necessary.
  7. Provide individual counselling and group therapies to patients/clients in accordance with Hospice Bereavement and Counselling Policies.
  8. Manage own counselling caseload.
  9. Maintain close communication with clinical colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure optimum, holistic care and support is provided for patients and families within the Hospice service.
  10. Oversee student counsellors on placement and liaise with universities.

Leadership

  1. Manage and coordinate the development and delivery of psychological and supportive care across the Hospice.
  2. Develop and coordinate the counselling and bereavement services in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services.

3. Provide effective line management of the team; conducting annual appraisals in an effective and timely manner, sickness/absence management, performance management, development of competencies and providing supervision as required.

4. Take responsibility for staff and volunteer support via 1:1s and the Take 10 for volunteers.

5. Manage the recruitment and selection process, both for staff and in conjunction with the volunteer coordinator for the volunteer workforce.

6. Lead regular team meetings, to disseminate information and share good practice or changes.

7. Maintain effective communication between Hospice staff to include managers, clinicians, all nursing staff, education, other Hospice staff and volunteers.

8. Manage and report complaints and compliments in line with Hospice policy.

  1. Network and liaise with statutory and voluntary organisations on issues relevant to the role of counsellor and psychological services.
  2. Assume responsibility for service delivery within agreed financial budget.

11. Contribute to the creation of grant applications in conjunction with relevant staff.

12. Actively participate as a member of operational management team and attend relevant subcommittee meetings e.g. Clinical Standards, HR & IT, Income services and others determined appropriate to role / needs of the service.

13. Participate in Hospice staff induction to explain the service provided.

14. Participate in risk assessments to ensure safe working practices are met.

15. Participate in audits for the department to support ongoing service improvement and development.

16. Actively gather and provide feedback and in conjunction with the Quality & development lead, proactively identify areas where changes to practices will result in quality improvements.

17. Undertake the collection of productivity and quality data. Provide reports as required by the Director of Clinical Services.

  1. Provide relevant service reports as required to the Director of Clinical Services and any relevant external partners e.g. ICP.
  2. Contribute to the Governance framework of the Hospice undertaking the updating of policies and procedures in line with government proposals, national and local guidelines. Keep up to date, informing the team of any changes in relations with governance activity and latest policies and procedures.

20. Working with the Director of Clinical Services, contribute to achieving the required compliance in relation to the CQC quality statements.

Education and Development
  1. Contribute to the training and development programme and courses within the Hospice as deemed appropriate in consultation with the Education coordinator and the Director of Clinical Services.
  2. Maintain own levels of professionalism and competence by attending training and development courses as required and as agreed with the line manager through the appraisal process.
  3. Facilitate clinical supervision for the Bereavement volunteers.
  4. Provide mentorship to new staff members and students on placement.
  5. Ensure attendance at Hospice mandatory training courses.
  6. Bring to attention of the Director of Clinical Services any training needs required, for both the post holder and others in the team, in addition to those provided routinely by the Hospice in line with annual appraisal and Springhills Business Plan.
  7. Contribute to research and audit as required in line with Hospice Policy.
  8. Undertake continuing professional development in line with BACP requirements.
  9. Ensure compliance within mandatory training requirements as determined by Springhill Hospice.
