Job summary

We are recruiting Healthcare Assistants to work on the Inpatient Ward at LOROS. The aim of our care is to provide high quality care to patients, their families and friends addressing physical, psychological, social and spiritual care needs. The focus of our care is to enhance the quality of life where possible and for those dying, to support them and their loved ones.

Applicants must be educated to NVQ level 2 or equivalent in healthcare and have previous experience of caring for patients requiring palliative care. You must be committed to the delivery of consistent high-quality care and be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job

The Healthcare Assistant provides clinical and non-clinical support to the multi-disciplinary team in promoting and maintaining a high standard of individualised patient care, taking into account the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of patients and those close to them.

A Healthcare Assistants duties are always delegated and supervised by a registered professional. The Healthcare Assistant also has the responsibility for ensuring that he/she does not carry out any delegated duty for which he/she does not possess the necessary competence/skills.

LOROS Hospice is a local charity and every year we care for over 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We deliver free, high-quality, compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, their family and carers. We deliver care that is special and unique to each individual.

We offer specialised care for those over 18 with complex problems who are suffering from a terminal illness when cure is no longer possible, this includes:

  • Short-stay inpatient ward for symptom management and/or end of life care

  • Outreach support in the patients home - Clinical Nurse Specialist and Compassionate Neighbours service

  • Day therapy

  • Complementary therapy

  • Counselling

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Carry out specified delegated clinical care and support, consistent with the patient plan of care.

2. Make observations with regard to supporting the patient / users general health and well-being.

3. Recognise and feedback any changes in patient condition and where required take appropriate action to support care and treatment under the direction of a registered professional.

4. Ensure effective communication with staff and patients and to refer questions from patients, relatives and carers to the appropriate personnel and communicate answers.

5. Carry out duties consistent with individual patient / users wishes, maintaining privacy, dignity and recognising cultural diversity and needs.

6. Organise and participation in therapeutic activities with patient and carers.

7. Maintaining confidentiality of patients and those close to them and ensuring information is only used in connection with authorised duties.

8. Maintain effective communication with the Registered Nurse / Health Care professional regarding issues relating to their assigned duties, promptly reporting areas of concern.

9. Acting as an escort for patients attending LOROS / hospital appointments / other visits

10. Maintain accurate patient records ensuring compliance with LOROS policies.

11. Contributing to providing a clean, safe and pleasant environment for patients, visitors and staff adhering to infection control / policies, procedures and best practice.

12. Assist and contribute to the efficient use of stock and resources.

Education and Personal Development:

  1. Undertake the induction programme and competency training programmes appropriate to role.

  1. Take responsibility for undertaking own mandatory training and updates as required. Raise any concerns with attending or accessing training.

  1. In collaboration with line manager take responsibility for fully participating with the appraisal process.

  1. Demonstrate skills and activities to others in similar roles and make a contribution as a team member to the training and support of learners.

  1. Keep up-to-date with current clinical and health care practices relevant to the workplace.
