Dispenser - GP Practice

Job summary

John Tasker House Surgery is seeking a Dispenser to support our existing team in the dispensary.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our in-house dispensary, and we are looking to recruit a qualified Dispenser to cover all areas of dispensary duties within our practice.

The successful candidate must be a motivated individual and be able to work well under pressure, have good interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient care. The candidate will need to be NVQ2 or equivalent qualified, have experience using SystmOne and experience performing final accuracy checks on dispensed prescriptions.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities are as follows but not exhaustive:

  • Assisting with processing repeat prescription requests, providing advice and being able to resolve queries
  • Stock management and maintenance
  • Dispensing prescriptions
  • Accuracy checking dispensed medication
  • Ensuring optimisation of medication
  • Working with GPs and other teams within the practice to ensure seamless service in regard to prescription requests
  • Analysing prescription data in order to produce accurate prescribing reports

The vacancy is up to full-time across Monday to Friday and specific dates/times of shifts will be discussed at interview.

The practice has a main surgery in Dunmow and a branch surgery in nearby Felsted. Dispensing staff work across both sites, and it is therefore essential that the successful candidate has their own means of transport.

About us

The practice has approximately 15,000+ patients serving our population via a main surgery in the centre of Dunmow and a branch surgery in nearby Felsted and are rated 'Good' by the Care Quality Commission. Our core opening hours are 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Fridays. Additionally, the practice is open for extended access appointments on some evenings and some Saturdays.

We are a friendly practice who have a values-based approach to recruitment. Our teams include a range of GPs, nurses, allied healthcare professionals and a full complement of administrative and reception staff.

Key Responsibilities: Dispensing & Clinical Support:

Dispense prescription medication and other medical products to patients under the direction of the GP Partners.

Use dispensing software to support dispensing. Count pills, label bottles and box medications to prepare prescriptions in accordance with SOPs.

Dispense controlled drugs and private scripts safely and in line with surgery SOPs.

Supply patients with information and education on their prescribed medication. Assist with reviews of medication including the Dispensing Review of Use of Medication (DRUM) and reauthorisation process.

Monitor the prescription-filling process to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and practice-specific policies. Liaise with healthcare providers and patients to confirm and clarify prescription information ensuring patient record is accurate.

Answer patient questions regarding medication, under the supervision and guidance of the GP.

Date-check stock and dispose of returned medication in line with regulations and practice policy. Place orders for medications and ensure availability of stock to meet patient demand.

Maintain and update electronic patient records accurately and confidentially.

Administrative & Operational Tasks: Perform administrative duties including answering phone calls, receiving and inputting prescription requests, and handling prescription queries.

Procure and manage stock, ensuring timely ordering and accurate inventory records. This will also involve managing stock to provide a cost-effective environment.

Complete sales transactions for the purchase of prescriptions, handling cash and card payments. Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised dispensary environment.

Gather, organise, and assess patient information as part of the dispensing and clinical process.

Support with audits, inspections, and quality improvement processes. Keep up to date with mandatory training and supplementary learning.

The post is based in a busy general practice dispensary and may involve standing for extended periods. The role may also require flexibility to cover shifts during staff absences.
