Job summary

We are looking for a full time HCA to enhance our Team. We are a small supportive team who work closely together and take pride in offering high quality patient care to our population.

This role acts as an autonomous Health Care Assistant based centrally in Ragsdale House providing clinical duties according to protocols and venepuncture/safe blood sampling where appropriate as part of a small, supportive, flexible team providing support to the Clinical and Managerial Team. We provide a high standard of clinical care which is responsive to the health needs of the population and supports our member Practices. You may be required to visit housebound patients in their homes as and when required.The role is full time, 37.5 hours per week, and you will need to be flexible to work between the hours of 8.00am and 6.30pm to cover our operational hours done as set shifts.

Main duties of the job

  • Routine, non-advice BP monitoring, ECG's and Phlebotomy (in clinics and home visits as required)
  • Assist in chronic disease/illness management clinics
  • CVD assessments
  • Health Promotion
  • Basic wound care and dressings
  • Assist in vaccination campaigns
  • Stock control
  • Manage clinical waste
  • Maintenance of safety/equipment checks
  • Meet and greet patients at reception and mark as arrived on the clinical system as and when required.

Swadlincote Primary Care Network (SPCN) has a patient population of 60,000 who are registered at our 5 member Practices.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

Health promotion acquire data and act upon any areas of concern by giving advice and / or literature or referral to a doctor to promote health and well-being of the patients, including smoking cessation advice

Routine, non-advice blood pressure monitoring (both in clinics and home visits as required).

Phlebotomy - on site clinics or in patients homes.

Urinalysis.

Height, weight, alcohol, smoking, other checks & calculating body mass index (BMI),

CVD assessments

Perform ECGs (both in clinics and home visits as required) Recording and downloading ECG for both routine and emergency situations

Chaperone duties as required.

Assist in chronic disease / illness management clinics i.e. take basic measurements, height / weight / BMI/ BP/ Pulse / oxygen saturations, possibly extending role to include peak flow.

Blood pressure recordings as per PCN / National guidelines (NICE)

Removal of wound closure materials in line with PCN policy / procedures, i.e. sutures / clips / steristrips.

Basic wound care dressing following removals of sutures, attend to patients in need of wound assessment and dressings as per protocol and with assistance from a Senior Clinician where required.

Assist in the vaccination campaigns, including influenza immunisation utilising Patient Specific Directions (PSDs) as per local policy / procedure.

First aid and assisting in management of medical emergencies

Non-clinical duties

Maintenance and stock control of consulting rooms.

Maintenance and stock control of treatment rooms and testing room including all venepuncture stock and urinalysis/stool sample bottles.

Maintain a register of medical refrigeration (min / max / actual) temperatures, as per local Policy / Procedure.

Emergency equipment administration.

Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Senior ANP, ensuring waste is correctly collected, placed in to appropriately assembled waste boxes, sealed, and prepared ready for collection and disposal.

Ensure sharps bins are appropriately assembled, sealed, and prepared ready for collection and disposal.

Ensure all samples are collected in appropriate, labelled containers and that it is consistent with the request form.

Ensure all specimens are in the appropriate collection box before leaving duty.

Administration and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the PCN team.

Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes.

Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded.

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.

Attend and participate in meetings as required.

Assist in formulation of PCN philosophy, strategy and policy.

To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu/Covid campaign.

Ordering and display of Health Promotion materials.

Management of appointment system

Ensure total familiarity with the appointment system including regular and incidental variations.

Book appointments and recalls ensuring sufficient information is recorded to enable retrieval of the medical record.

Cover Reception as and when required and mark patients as arrived on the clinical system
