Job summary

New North Health Centre, a dynamic and growing practice based in Islington, has an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our team to cover maternity leave.

The successful candidate will uphold our values of delivering excellent patient care and contribute to our vision of meeting the health needs of our diverse community. Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant in an NHS GP practice is essential, along with phlebotomy experience. A valid phlebotomy training certificate is required.

The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive administrative and multidisciplinary clinical team, including GPs, Nurses and Clinical Pharmacists.

We aim to develop positive, supportive and professional relationships with every patient, clinician and allied professional we interact with.

Working Hours: Minimum 7 hours per week (negotiable)

Shift hours are:

Tuesday 9am - 12.30pm

Wednesday 9am - 12.30pm

Main duties of the job

  • Support clinical staff with patient care, including taking observations (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight) and recording medical information.

  • Assist with basic clinical procedures, dressings, and wound care under supervision.

  • Prepare patients for consultations and examinations.

  • Perform phlebotomy (valid phlebotomy training certificate required) and other routine clinical tasks, where trained and competent.

  • Maintain accurate patient records using clinical systems (e.g., EMIS Web).

  • Ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients and staff.

  • Support health promotion initiatives and provide basic advice on lifestyle and wellbeing.

About us

New North Health Centre is a well-established single handed GP practice in Islington, with a list size of 1500 patients.

The surgery has undergone a significant number of changes over the past year including a new clinical and administrative leadership team following retirement of the previous GP.

We use EMIS Web, Docman, AccuRx and E-Consult.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Undertake new patient and NHS health checks

  • Support the practice with health promotion programmes

  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately

  • Undertake wound care, dressings, and other clinical tasks as required

  • Support the practice with the management of chronic disease clinics

  • Carry out BMI checks as directed

  • Act as a chaperone as required

  • Perform venepuncture / phlebotomy (valid phlebotomy training certificate required)

  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

  • Ensure the clinical area is adequately stocked and prepared for each session

  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from the clinical area and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

  • Carry out any other tasks as directed in support of patient care
