Job summary

We have an opportunity for an additional Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our team at Martlesham Heath Surgery.

A great opportunity to work with an innovative and expanding surgery alongside current members of staff.

We are looking to employ an HCA, ideally with Primary Care / GP Experience to join our small friendly clinical team. For our team the successful candidate would have a wealth of knowledge and ideally bring a minimum of 2 to 3 years experience with them. You would be able to undertake phlebotomy, screening and diagnostic procedures, vaccinations, basic wound care, and lots more.

Our Clinical team is built on Health Care Assistants, Practice Nurses, Advanced Care Practitioners, Paramedics and GPs who are assisted by our Reception and Administration staff.This role will be assisting the nurse, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective nursing services to the whole practice population. As a member of the clinical nursing team the post holder is responsible for their own practice, whilst being accountable to the senior trained nurse on duty.

We currently utilise Anima, a clinical system to allow online contact with our patients. Some, but not all, requests for Clinical care are received via this system.

Working hours:

Between 8am and 6:30pm

Extended access clinic on a Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm

With additional overtime, sickness and annual leave cover also available. Full discussion of availability / working hours will be had at interview.

Main duties of the job

You will delivering care within the boundaries of their role, focusing upon supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring of long-term conditions, health prevention and screening activities.

  • ECGs
  • Phlebotomy
  • NHS Health Checks
  • Discussing lifestyle and helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted, including Smoking Cessation
  • Basic observations including BP, height weight, temperature and pulse
  • Long term disease management checks and appropriate escalation
  • Administration of injectable medications such as vaccines and B12s under indirect supervision
  • To undertake basic wound care and suture/clip removal, assisting the nurses.
  • Chaperoning duties
  • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
  • Liaising with the Lead Nurse to assist in the execution of flu clinics and/or other health campaigns as needed
  • You may be required to call eligible patients to book their appointment for routine appointments e.g. routine smears, immunisations, and NHS Health Checks
  • Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

You will be working with our clinical teams to deliver the best primary care healthcare service to our patients.

HCA duties and clinical administrative work will be part of your normal day.

Clinical responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Practice Nurse with annual reviews; such as hypertension, CHD, Stroke and Peripheral Arterial Disease, AF and a variety of other Primary Care / QOF required reviews
  • New patient health checks and other health screening
  • Urinalysis and preparation of specimen
  • Routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  • Blood tests and phlebotomy
  • Vaccinations including, but not limited to flu/pneumococcal vaccines
  • Administering B12 injections
  • Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as and when required, either alone or under supervision of the Practice Nurse
  • Patient education and promotion of health and well-being, promoting NHS campaigns if needed
  • Gathering lifestyle data from patients to ensure accurate record keeping along with educating or signposting to external sources to promote health and well-being
