Job summary

Thornaby & Barwick Medical Group are seeking a Prescription Clerk / Typist to join our busy team for around 30 hours a week.

The role includes being responsible for the accurate and timely processing of prescription requests for the entitled population, liaising effectively with all relevant personnel.

Duties can include, but are not limited to, the processing of repeat prescriptions in electronic and hard copy format, including online requests. In addition, the post holder will be required to support the multidisciplinary team, ensuring the strategic objectives of the organisation are met.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the Prescription Clerk / Typist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Process repeat prescription requests received by email, post, slips and the online access system, in accordance with practice protocol
  • Produce prescriptions for the GP to sign in an acceptable timeframe
  • Ensure all prescription requests are processed and are ready for collection within a 48-hour timeframe
  • Generate requests for medication on behalf of the patient for non-repeat items
  • Act upon compliance issues, liaising with the appropriate clinician
  • Ensure medication reviews are arranged by maintaining an accurate recall system
  • Effectively liaise with external services
  • Input data into the patients healthcare records as necessary
  • Deal with all prescription related enquiries in a timely manner
  • Record and report adverse effects accurately and appropriately, informing the GP immediately
  • Data input onto systmOne
  • Carry out system searches as requested
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times

About us

Thornaby and Barwick Medical Group is a two site GP Practice taking care of the population in the Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick areas.We have a practice population of around 21,500.We are an experienced training practice with 8 GP partners, supported by our wonderful nursing team and resilient reception and admin teams.

We also work as part of BYTES Primary Care Network, which is made up of 4 GP practices working in partnership.

Job responsibilities

Duties will include co-coordinating and preparing repeat prescriptions for our patients, data entry onto patient records, EPS and patient and pharmacy liaison. The tasks and responsibilities to be undertaken may include any or all of the items in the following lists, dependent on current and evolving practice workload.

Work with our GPs to provide a responsive repeat prescription service delegated to the Prescription team as appropriate;

Delivering the technical aspects of prescription preparation to ensure the safe prescribing of medicines;

Delivering an efficient prescription service and ensuring service targets are met and errors are minimised;

Liaise with pharmacies on the supply of prescribed drugs, alert our clinicians of any supply issues and forward information on the recommended alternatives;

Expedite urgent prescriptions to help ensure a safe and responsive service for our Patients;

Provide an efficient administration service as part of a Team to ensure the smooth running of the prescription support to our clinicians;

Ensure you are keeping Patient information updated and that Patient information is secure and kept confidential at all times;

Maintain accurate Patient records promptly and quickly - entering data in accordance with reporting requirements;

Check emails/inbox throughout the day and deal with them appropriately;

Undertake training as requested to support safe and effective services for the Practice;

Carry out any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the GPs/practice manager/line manager;

Create Choose & Book referrals via SystmOne;

Typing and sending Choose & Book and paper referrals and emailing to appropriate providers;

Monitor and maintain Choose & Book work list, informing relevant staff of referral and advice/ guidance responses;

Ensuring referrals are sent in a timely manner;

Ensure correct referral forms are used and appropriate funding allocations are sought where applicable;

Create and send 2 week rule referrals and ensures 2 week rule spreadsheet is up to date;

Liaise with external services.
