Job summary

Burgess Road Surgery is a forward-thinking, patient-focused GP practice committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care.

We are seeking an experienced Respiratory Nurse to further develop and support our Asthma and COPD services, while also contributing to the wider General Practice Nurse role within our treatment room team.

This role will involve a mixture of respiratory chronic disease management alongside general practice nursing duties including treatment room procedures, cervical cytology, immunisations and chronic disease monitoring.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, HCAs and the wider practice team to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

Respiratory Role

The successful candidate will:

  • Manage Asthma and COPD clinics in line with NICE and local ICB guidance

  • Undertake comprehensive respiratory assessments

  • Perform and interpret spirometry (ARTP accreditation desirable)

  • Undertake FeNO testing where trained

  • Optimise inhaler therapy and provide personalised care plans

  • Conduct annual respiratory reviews and QOF-related activity

  • Support early diagnosis of COPD and Asthma

  • Provide smoking cessation advice where appropriate

  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary practice and PCN team

  • Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives

General Practice Nurse Responsibilities

The role will also include:

  • Treatment room services including wound care and complex dressings

  • Removal of sutures and clips

  • ECG recording

  • Cervical cytology (smear tests)

  • Childhood and adult immunisations

  • Travel vaccinations (where trained)

  • Support for chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes, hypertension)

  • Delivery of NHS Health Checks

  • Blood pressure monitoring and cardiovascular risk assessment

  • Phlebotomy (where required)

  • Contraceptive advice and administration (where trained)

  • Compliance with infection prevention and control procedures

  • Participation in clinical audit and practice protocols

Job Purpose

The Respiratory and General Practice Nurse will provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care within Burgess Road Surgery. The post holder will lead and support respiratory services within the practice, including the management of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while also contributing to the wider treatment room and chronic disease management services.

The role involves working autonomously within professional competence while collaborating closely with GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Healthcare Assistants and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care.

The post holder will support the practice in achieving national and local targets including Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) indicators and will contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of respiratory and treatment room services.

Key ResponsibilitiesRespiratory Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Deliver nurse-led asthma and COPD clinics in line with NICE guidelines and local ICB policies.

  • Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments, including history taking, symptom assessment and inhaler technique review.

  • Perform and interpret spirometry testing in accordance with ARTP standards (or work towards accreditation).

  • Undertake FeNO testing where available and appropriately trained.

  • Support the early identification and diagnosis of respiratory disease.

  • Develop and implement individualised patient management plans.

  • Optimise inhaler therapy and medication adherence.

  • Provide self-management education and personalised asthma action plans.

  • Support smoking cessation and refer patients to appropriate services.

  • Monitor and manage patients with stable chronic respiratory conditions.

  • Contribute to the achievement and monitoring of QOF respiratory indicators.

  • Liaise with secondary care and community services where appropriate.

  • Have a recognised qualification or training in Asthma and COPD management.
  • Have a minimum of 23 years nursing experience within primary care.
  • Have experience managing patients with asthma and COPD, including undertaking reviews and developing management plans.
  • Have experience running nurse-led respiratory clinics.
  • Be competent in cervical cytology (smear tests).
  • Have experience in treatment room nursing, including wound care, dressings, ECG recording and routine procedures.
  • Have experience contributing to Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) indicators, particularly respiratory indicators.
  • Have a good understanding of NICE guidance for asthma and COPD.
  • Demonstrate strong clinical assessment and patient management skills.
  • Be able to work independently and make autonomous clinical decisions within their scope of practice.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to support patients with long-term conditions.
