Job summary

We are looking to welcome a Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic and supportive team at Humberstone Medical Centre. This vacancy is for 15-30 hours per week. We welcome applicants with or without GP experience. If you have the right skills and qualities, we can provide on-going support to develop professionally.

Main duties of the job

There is a need to better utilise the role of pharmacy technician within primary care to pro-actively help patients stay safe and well and out of hospital as well as helping to reduce the demands on general practice. Pharmacy technicians play an important role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists and other members of the practice multi-disciplinary team.

The Pharmacy technician will be working under supervision to ensure effective and efficient use of medicines. Pharmacy technicians core role responsibilities will cover clinical, and technical and administrative categories.

We are a teaching practice and take GP Registrars and Medical students on rotation.

We are part of Salutem Primary Care Network and take a lead role in it with the previous and current Clinical Director both being partners in the practice. Salutem PCN has an excellent reputation for collaborative working in multiple projects and seeking to maintain high standards of patient care in all 5 practices within it.

Job responsibilities

Ensuring that requests for repeat prescriptions are actioned

Responding to all queries and requests from chemists, nursing homes and district nurses, regarding the issue of prescriptions

Aligning patient medication reviews with chronic disease monitoring.

Support the Clinical Pharmacist in Structure Medication Reviews (SMR) i.e. organise necessary monitoring tests prior to SMR

Prescribing Incentive Scheme issuing reports and letters, working around any guidelines issued ensuring budget reductions where possible.

Medicine management, liaising and discussing any enquires or queries raised by the clinical team

Manage shared care protocols and liaise with Clinical Pharmacists for more complex patients. Contributing to the provision of safe and effective pharmacy services. Undertaking medicines reconciliation in line with practice protocols and standard operating procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of prescriptions and repeat prescriptions. Participating in medication audits. Providing advice and information to GPs, staff and patients to support the improvement of prescribing safety, quality, cost-effectiveness and the appropriate use of medicines to get the best outcomes for patients.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional registration with GPhC
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences

Desirable

  • Enrolled in, undertaking or qualified from, an approved training pathway. For example, the Primary Care Pharmacy Educational Pathway (PCPEP) or Medicines Optimisation in Care Homes (MOCH)

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Ability to identify risk and assess/manage risk when working with individuals
  • Sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations
  • Able to finish work tasks
  • Problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of and ability to work to policies and procedures, including confidentiality, safeguarding, lone working, information governance and health and safety.
  • Access to own transport and/or ability to travel to the surgery
