Job summary

The post holder is a Physician Associate (PA) who acts within their professional boundaries.

The PA is a key addition to The Bay Medical Practice clinical team and will work under the mentorship of one of the GP Partners, with daily support from the entire medical team, contributing to acute and chronic medical care of all patients within the practice.

The PA will independently assess diagnose and manage patients with acute and chronic medical conditions, coordinating with other primary and secondary healthcare services as appropriate. There is an expectation that the PA will attend to patients within the practices and also at their own homes or care homes and will coordinate care with other members of the practice and external providers.

Whilst the PA role is not able to prescribe independently at present, the expectation will be to make recommendations regarding drug treatment and medication reviews.

Appropriate training and mentoring will be provided as necessary.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the physician associate. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a patient facing role to clinically assess, investigate and diagnose patients presenting with an undifferentiated diagnosis, calling on the expertise of GPs as needed

To receive referrals and directed patients from triage services and other clinicians

To manage a caseload of complex patients and potential care institutions

To plan, implement and evaluate treatment/interventions for patients with acute and chronic physical and psychological conditions

To utilise as needed the full range of non-drug therapies for all patients, consider pharmacological interventions and make recommendations to prescribers in accordance with evidence-based practice and national, local and practice protocols

To prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care

To support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care

To review the latest guidance ensuring the practice conforms to NICE, CQC etc.

To provide targeted support and proactive reviews for vulnerable, complex patients and those at risk of admission and re-admission to secondary care

To deliver home visits if required

To be responsive to the changing needs of patients and service provision in terms of scope and nature of clinical practice

To prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality

To undertake clinical responsibilities as required by the Practice within scope of practice

To identify and be proactive in your training needs and development and as agreed with clinical mentor

To recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct as regulated

To produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures

To support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements on behalf of the Practice

To support virtual and remote models of consultation and support including e-consultations, telehealth and telemedicine

To participate in the management of patient complaints when requested to do so and participate in the identification of any necessary learning brought about through incidents and near-miss events

To develop yourself and the role through participation in clinical supervision, training and service redesign activities

To contribute to a patient safety culture through reporting and investigation of significant events and patient safety incidents and to undertake proactive measures to improve patient safety

To actively signpost patients to the correct healthcare professional

To undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes

To contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance

To attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

To contribute to public health campaigns (e.g. flu clinics) through advice or direct care

To maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times.

  • Physician Associate Postgraduate Diploma/Masters from accredited UK university.
  • Registered with PAMVR.
  • Evidence of working autonomously or as part of a team.
  • Understanding and knowledge of healthcare provision in GP surgeries, QOF and Enhanced Service.
  • Knowledge of national standards that inform practice (NSF, NICE Guidelines).
  • Understanding GMC Good Medical Practice, medico-legal aspects of PA role.
  • Experience and an awareness of common acute and chronic conditions that are likely to be seen in general practice.
  • Good personal organisational skills.
  • Effective time management.
