PRACTICE NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS: REGISTERED GENERAL NURSE

(Membership of a professional body is essential)

ACCOUNTABLE TO: All GP Partners

JOB SUMMARY: To work as part of the practice team in providing nursing care to the practice population. This will include monitoring junior nurses and HCSW’s, health promotion, screening and direct nursing care within the professional competence of the person appointed and in line with the U.K.C.C. Code of Professional Conduct.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Treatment room activities including: routine injections, immunisations, wound care, contraception advice.

Taking laboratory specimens including blood, urine and swabs, also despatching if necessary.

Undertaking diagnostic tests including blood sugars, reversibility tests, peak flow recording and ECGs.

Advising patients on health promotion and illness prevention.

Advising and demonstrating to patients the use of equipment such as inhalers, peak flow meters, glucose monitoring stix and meters.

Diabetes annual review checks with support from GP

Undertaking health screening programmes as agreed with the doctors and ensuring that appropriate registers are maintained for the call and recall of patients.

Maintaining adequate stocks generally and in treatment rooms and doctor’s rooms, of such items as dressings, drugs, instruments, specimen bottles, diagnostic agents and utensils.

Maintaining the treatment room in a clean and tidy manner.

Assisting with the management of – Diabetes, asthma, general health, new registration check, and childhood immunisation. Also assisting with minor surgery when necessary.

Any other duties as may be determined from time to time commensurate with the range of activities described above.

Care of patients for contraceptive or menopausal care

Weight management and diet advice and literature.

Travel vaccinations advice and administration.

Storage and ordering of vaccines and drugs.

Knowledge of resuscitation techniques.

Responsibility for care of patients registered with practice.

Referral to other agencies when necessary.

To be willing to attend any necessary training sessions to improve the quality of work.

Chaperoning of patients when required by other clinicians

Ensuring that appointments are on the computer correctly – annual leave taken off system as necessary to avoid confusion.

The Post Holder is required to make positive efforts to promote their own personal safety and that of others by taking reasonable care at work by carrying out requirements of law or following recognised codes of practice and co-operating with any safety measures provided or advised by the employers to ensure safe working.

Any accident or injury to staff or the public must be reported to the duty doctor immediately and entered in the accident book.

The practice manager must be notified of any intended annual leave or study leave at least 6 weeks before or as soon as possible, and all study and annual leave must be approved before arranging any travel

The practice nurse is required to liaise with other members of the practice team to ensure communication is kept up to date

The post holder should be prepared to be flexible in attitude to work and willing to undertake other duties within reason, if asked by the doctor. Occasionally a nurse may be asked to work overtime if a colleague is on holiday/ill/absent. 

Employees of The Practice must not, without prior permission disclose any information regarding patients. In instances where it is known that members of staff have communicated information to unauthorised persons, those members of staff concerned will be liable to dismissal.

Experience

Essential

• Experience of working in a GP practice.
• Clinical skills and experience in treatment room consultation, management of long term conditions, cervical cytology, vaccinations and immunisations.
• Right to work in the UK.
• UK references.
• Excellent I.T skills.

Desirable

• EMIS web experience

Qualifications

Essential

• Qualified Registered Nurse with current NMC registration and active PIN
