We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented qualified Dispenser to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in the medication dispensing process, ensuring that patients receive their prescribed medications accurately and efficiently. This position requires a strong commitment to patient care.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job

Dispense NHS prescriptions for our registered patients in a timely manner.

- Handing out dispensed medications and dealing with face to face queries.

- Answering the telephone and assisting with dispensing queries.

- Assist with ordering stock.

- Issuing repeat medications as per practice policy.

Assist with Dispensary delivery service

- Following dispensary SOP's at all times.

About us

The Gables Medical Group is a GP surgery based in Bedlington, Northumberland. We have a registered list size of 6,300. Our small on-site Dispensary covers a nearby village, Cambois, dispensing medications to approx 350 patients. The Dispensary is open 8:30-12:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and offers a delivery service to eligible patients.

Job responsibilities

Dealing with requests for repeat prescriptions

To take repeat prescription orders by telephone, email, and face to face and process the requests via the clinical system (SystmOne).

Process tasks appropriately where medication requests require authorisation by a GP.

Dispensing medication

To dispense medication requested by patients.

To check medications dispensed when required

To issue checked medications to patients and to recheck all requested medication is present.

To take cash/ card payments

Dealing with the computerised drugs ordering system and special orders.

To maintain adequate stock levels of drugs, controlled drugs and consumables e.g. batteries, bags and boxes.

To receive and check the drug order against invoices on receipt into the surgery and to put away correctly paying special attention to controlled and refrigerated drugs.

To return incorrect items to the wholesalers.

To deal with the special ordering of drugs from suppliers other than AAH ensuring special order form is completed.

To contact the dispensary manager in respect of any queries and problems with drug stocks.

Maintaining an accurate stock level

To enter correctly the drug order onto the computer database

To check drugs shelves for accuracy of stock levels.

To ensure generic drugs are entered correctly on the drug database.

To take part in regular stock take of drugs.

To record and destroy out of date drug stocks.

Prescribing

To be aware of the current requirements for the endorsing of prescriptions.

General responsibilities for the dispensary

To keep the dispensary and stock cupboards tidy

To check and order prescription, labels, bags, boxes

To ensure following the dispensary SOPS at all times

To ensure dispensing skills are kept up to date, attending appropriate course when requested to do so.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths, Grade C or above
  • Dispensary NVQ Level 2

Desirable

  • Dispensary NVQ Level 3

Experience

  • Knowledge of medication administration protocols and patient care practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with patients and healthcare staff.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a primary care setting
