Job summary

This is a 1 year fixed term contract however this could be renewed annually.

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to join our GP practice team. Working in a non-dispensing setting, you will support the clinical and administrative functions related to medicines optimisation, repeat prescribing, audits, and patient care. You will collaborate closely with the GPs, Nurses, and Administrative staff to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines across the practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Support and streamline the repeat prescription process, ensuring safe and appropriate prescribing.
  • Conduct medicines reconciliation post-discharge or after outpatient appointments.
  • Assist in reviewing prescribing patterns, identifying cost-effective switches and safety alerts (e.g., MHRA, NPSA).
  • Support long-term condition management via medicines-related reviews and patient education (within scope of practice).
  • Implement and maintain systems for high-risk drug monitoring (e.g., methotrexate, lithium, warfarin).
  • Carry out audits and contribute to quality improvement projects.
  • Provide training and support to practice staff around medicines policies and repeat prescribing systems.
  • Manage and respond to medicines-related queries from patients and staff.
  • Liaise with community pharmacies, care homes, and secondary care providers as needed.
  • Help ensure medicines are prescribed safely in line with clinical guidelines, local formulary, and best practice.

Essential

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council GPhC
  • Experience in primary care, community, or hospital pharmacy
  • Strong understanding of medicines management and prescribing systems
  • Excellent communication, IT, and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Previous experience working in general practice or a non dispensing setting
  • Knowledge of clinical systems SystmOne
  • Understanding of NHS prescribing policies and formularies
  • Accreditation in medicines reconciliation or repeat prescribing or willingness to work towards
