Job summary

An exciting, opportunity has arisen for a Dispenser to join our Dispensary Team. Initially based at our Kegworth Practice the role will move to our Gotham site in due course. You will be working part-time - 21 hours per week - and will receive full training in order to assist our busy but friendly team.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Dispenser who holds NVQ Level 2 in dispensing or equivalent.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and possesses excellent communication and organisational skills, proficient in IT and have excellent attention to detail.

Flexibility to cover sickness and absence, sometimes at short notice, is a must.

Experience of working in General Practice and Systmone is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The main duties will be dispensing medication from prescriptions. You will also have to check medications dispensed by other dispensers. You will deal with stock incoming and outgoing, deal with medication orders and queries from patients, and work closely with the GPs to deliver great service to our patients in all matters related to medications and prescriptions.

About us

Orchard Surgery is a friendly and successful village GP surgery situated in Kegworth, on the borders of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. We also have a branch site in Gotham.

We have a team of 5 GP Partners, 3 salaried GPs, 3 Practice Nurses and a Management and Administration Team who provide support to them all.

We are a member practice of PartnersHealth which is the GP Federation for Rushcliffe and the employer for all additional roles within the Rushcliffe PCN.

As a practice we are passionate about patient care and enthusiastic about being a training practice hosting Trainee GPs and Medical and Nursing students.

Job responsibilities

Job summary:

To process all relevant prescriptions as authorised by the practice GPs in accordance with the principles of good practice.

Project a positive and friendly image to dispensary patients and other visitors and deal with queries in a professional, courteous and efficient manner.

The Dispenser must be prepared to undertake any necessary training to ensure that they have the necessary skills and competence required for this role.

Key tasks:

Process and dispense prescriptions for patients in accordance with the practice standard operating procedures, to ensure safe supply to patients in an efficient and accurate manner. Whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions to check with a GP.

Issue prepared prescriptions to patients.

Dealing with medication tasks / queries for both dispensing and non-dispensing patients.

Deal with patients in a courteous and professional manner. Ensuring confidentiality at all times.

Collect prescription charges / check patient exemption statements ensuring all monies received or handled on behalf of the practice are appropriately stored and a record kept of all financial transactions.

Endorse all prescriptions as appropriate. Support the Lead Dispenser to collate and forward the prescriptions in a secure manner to the PPA for processing and reimbursement.

To notify the authorising doctor of any FP10 returns / feedback from the PPA so that any appropriate remedial action may be taken.

Ensure all dispensary equipment is kept clean and in good working order. All work surfaces are cleaned and tidied on a regular basis.

Ensure that refrigerated items are stored at the appropriate temperature and maintain the temperature control record/logbook.

Ensure drugs are received and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.

Operate efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the dispensary with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage.

Attendance at, and input to, practice and group meetings as appropriate.

Maintain full and accurate computerised records of all dispensing transactions.

Promptly forward all invoices and dispensary related correspondence to the Practice Manager or Lead Dispenser according to practice policy.

Ensure that Significant Events and near misses relating to Dispensing Services are identified, recorded and discussed with the Lead Dispenser, Practice Manager and Dispensary Lead GP.

Ensure security of the dispensary and contents.

Checking for and timely actioning of medication alerts as well as maintaining records.

Secondary Tasks:

In addition to the key tasks, the Dispenser may be requested to:

Participate in audit as directed by the Lead Dispenser for submission of Dispensing Services Quality Scheme.

Undertake Dispensing Review of the Use of Medicines (DRUMS)

Participate in the production and review of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures

Remain current with the latest guidance ensuring the dispensary conforms to the guidance and standards of bodies such as NICE and CQC.
