Job summary
The Practice Nurse plays a key role in delivering high-quality nursing care to the registered patient population, working as part of a multidisciplinary primary care team. The post holder will support the practice in delivering safe, effective and compassionate care within their professional scope of practice, undertaking clinical assessments, providing treatment, and promoting health and wellbeing in line with practice policies and protocols.
Main duties of the job
Working both independently and collaboratively with GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals, the Practice Nurse will carry out a wide range of clinical duties including immunisations, travel health advice, venepuncture, blood pressure monitoring, wound care, cervical screening, spirometry, ECGs & health checks. The role also includes supporting contraception reviews, assisting with minor surgery and contributing to long-term condition management such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension and stroke prevention.
The Practice Nurse will contribute to safeguarding processes by identifying vulnerable patients and referring concerns appropriately. They will maintain accurate clinical records, ensure correct coding and documentation, and communicate effectively with patients and the wider healthcare team.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate patient records, ensuring appropriate clinical coding, identifying vulnerable patients and raising safeguarding concerns when necessary. The post holder will work collaboratively with GPs, practice staff and external healthcare professionals, contribute to administrative tasks related to patient care, maintain stock and clinical areas, and participate in training, meetings and professional development.

- You will need a relevant nursing quialification which could be a certificate of nursing, degree or diploma.
- Full registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) without restrictions on practice
Desirable
- Relevant qualification in chronic disease management, ideally with a focus on respiratory care
Experience
Essential
- Minimum of 1 years experience of working as a General Practice Nurse
- Cytology training and competence
- Immunisation training and competence
- Ability to perform respiratory reviews (with appropriate training and competence)
- Ability to maintain accurate patient records
- Experience of working within practice based clinical protocols and evidence based practice
- Good knowledge of Infection, prevention and control procedures
- Knowledge of national immunisation schedules
- Ability to keep updated on relevant national guidance relating to practice nursing
- Competence in documentation and clinical coding
