exciting opportunity has arisen for a Phlebotomist to join our dynamic
team at Chapelgreen Practice. We are a well-established, forward thinking, 8 partner practice, in the North of Sheffield, serving over 14,000 patients
across two sites. We are an enthusiastic training practice and take pride in
delivering excellent patient care.
Chapelgreen Practice require an experienced, enthusiastic, and
motivated Phlebotomist to join our busy friendly team.
The ideal candidate should be able to work well in a team and
demonstrate the ability to be proactive in developing the practice.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
Perform venepuncture on adult patients in line with practice protocols. Handle and prepare blood samples accurately for transport to the laboratory. Ensure samples are processed in accordance with laboratory and infection control requirements. Recognise and respond appropriately to adverse reactions during or after venepuncture. Carry out other clinical tasks as appropriate and within competency (e.g. blood pressure, BMI, urine testing if trained)
Patient Care
Provide a professional, friendly and reassuring service to patients. Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality and respect at all times
Manage appointment flow efficiently to minimise waiting times
Infection Prevention & Safety
Adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times. Ensure safe disposal of sharps and clinical waste. Maintain a clean and well-stocked clinical area. Follow health and safety, COSHH and risk management procedures
Administrative Duties
Accurately record procedures in the clinical system (SystmOne). Monitor and order phlebotomy stock and consumables. Liaise with laboratories regarding sample issues or queries
Support audits, recalls and quality improvement activities where required
Professional Responsibilities
Work within agreed protocols, scope of practice and competency level
Participate in training, supervision and appraisal. Maintain mandatory training and professional development
Contribute to a positive team environment within the practice and PCN

JOB TITLE: Health Care Assistant
RESPONSIBLE TO: Partners/Nurse Team Leader/Practice Manager
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:
To support care given by senior clinicians in the practice, by working alone and as part of the team, following practice protocols. Provide simple monitoring and measurements of the patients according to the level of competencies achieved and to organise and manage venepuncture clinics. Housekeeping of the clinical supplies and instruments is also included in this role.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES/AIMS:
- The post holder will be able to work alone and as part of a team, following practice protocols.
- Be aware of current evidence based practice and standards. Demonstrate this in supporting the care and service provided by the senior clinicians.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
- Phlebotomy, including completing appropriate forms as directed by clinicians.
- Appointing patients into appropriate clinics.
- Stock control of all clinical areas and central stores.
- Baseline measurements.
- New patient medicals
- Routine blood pressure checks, referring patients to the practice nurse or doctors as per practice protocols.
- Fitting & reporting of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Machines.
- Ordering vaccines and clinical stock.
- Maintaining record of refrigerator temperatures and cleaning as appropriate.
- Act as patient chaperone as required.
- In-house testing of urine samples.
- Escalating any problems to the nurse team leader or practice manager.
- Administration of vaccinations and immunisations as authorised under Patient Specific Directives by the Nurse Team Manager or other suitably qualified clinician. Providing certified training has been attained.
OTHER DUTIES
Testing of emergency medical equipment.
Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines.
Ensure the decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment according to local and national guidelines.
To be aware of current evidence based approaches to patient care and demonstrates this through continuous improvement of patient care
- The post holder will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times and be aware of Caldicott principles.
- The post holder will be expected to familiarise themselves with the health and safety poster of the practice and maintain the responsibilities outlined.
- The post holder will be expected to remain abreast of current evidence based practice and make use of the learning opportunities offered.
- Infection control is a significant part of the role with cleaning and sterilising of instruments, and management of clinical waste.
- Ordering and storage of equipment and vaccines.
