Job summary
We are establishing a new role of Medical
Director at Nottinghamshire Local Medical Committee Ltd after reviewing how we best represent, advise and support our
colleagues in general practice across Nottingham & Nottinghamshire. This is
well-timed as we enter a new three-year term for our committee.
We feel that strong clinical leadership is
crucial for the profession and look for the successful candidate to work with
the chief executive, committee and particularly the practice liaison team to ensure
that general practice can survive and thrive in these difficult times.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be a working GP currently on the performers list and actively working within general practice thus able to bring current personal experience of working in practices.
The person we want will be determined to protect general practice but also help us to promote the profession locally within the integrated care system. They will be good communicators and be comfortable talking in large groups as well as on a one-to-one basis.
There will be a need to negotiate on behalf of the profession and advocate for colleagues in various settings. With our relentless push for safe working, our new Medical Director will be able to help us to lead this work and promote its adoption across our practices to make care safer but also help practices to cope with demand and reclaim a better work/life balance.

Nottinghamshire Local Medical Committee Ltd is:

Role Title: Medical Director
Responsible to: Chief Executive/Chair
Main purpose of role: To support the LMC committee and LMC liaison team as a clinical leader. Provide leadership and scrutiny working closely with the Chair on all company functions and priorities.
Support the work of the Chief Executive in the delivery of the objectives of the LMC and LMC Limited, from a clinical perspective.
To develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders ensuring that the general practice perspective is heard.
Main tasks of role:
- Leadership. To provide clinical leadership and advice to the LMC liaison team and committee on a range of clinical issues. To provide a prominent and consistent clinical leadership presence for the LMC across the local care system.
- Provide guidance, assistance, and non-legal advice to constituents on various matters, utilising support of the British Medical Associations General Practitioners Committee as appropriate.
- Support the LMC Secretary (Chief Executive) in his role on the LMC. Respond to key documents, new pathways, enhanced services etc. that require policy decisions from the LMC involving colleagues in the committee as appropriate.
- Take a key role in helping to bring the LMC strategy to life and monitor performance against the aims contained within.
- Develop positive relationships with GPs, practices, GP provider groups and Primary Care Networks as well as external bodies including the local and national media.
- To provide strategic advice and guidance to the Chief Executive, the board and directors and committee Chair regarding statutory and constitutional matters from a clinical perspective.
- To maintain an understanding of relevant local and national NHS polices, particularly those pertaining (but not exclusively) to primary care and general practice, that may impact on the delivery of the statutory functions and key LMC projects.
- To be able to negotiate on behalf of the profession on pricing for new and renewed contracts/enhanced services and represent practices in conflict with commissioners and other parties.
- To help with facilitating meetings between GP partners, Primary Care Network practices, general practice professionals and other key stakeholders.
- Work closely with the Chief Executive and Chair to ensure that proper constitutional, governance and development arrangements are put in place to assure the members (through the Board) of the LMCs on-going capability and capacity to meet its duties and responsibilities.
- Lead the development of motions to LMC Conferences by engaging with the committee members and via them the wider GP constituency. Attending UK and England LMC Conferences where required.
- Support and promote the organisation in the wider primary care arena.
- Act as an ambassador for Nottinghamshire general practice to the local system and work to gain a prominent profile locally and nationally.
- Produce timely and accurate meeting notes, letters, articles, and enquiry responses working with the practice liaison team.
- Contribute to the development and deployment of LMC committee members within the budgetary confines of the organisation.
- Read and summarise new guidance, legislation, relevant documents affecting the profession and lead the education of LMC colleagues to enable them to keep up to date.
- To report to the Chief Executive, Board and committees, on local and national NHS regulation and policy as well as statutory and constitutional matters as appropriate.
