Trainee General Practice Assistant (GPA)

Job summary

The GPA will support the GP's, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and other clinicians with the smooth running of the Practice and its clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the Practice, freeing up their time to focus on the patient.

Full training is provided for this role, with time given for study and for mentoring by a GP. Upon completion the candidate will receive a 'GPA Skills Certificate'.

Main duties of the job

Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP/clinicians in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinicalpharmacist etc.

Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs codingand adding to notes.

Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow upappointments of patients.

Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP/clinician, taking a briefhistory and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.

Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy.

Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of someforms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms,mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.

Explaining treatment procedures to patients.

Helping the GP/clinicians liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on calldoctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while theGP/clinician can continue with their consultation(s).

Support the GP/clinicians with immunisations/wound care.
