Job summary

As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. They focus on supporting General Practitioners in their day-to-day management of patients, specifically aimed at reducing the administrative burden, making the best use of consultation time and supporting those particularly vulnerable to isolation who are regular attenders at the practice.

Main duties of the job

As a GP Assistant, you will sort and prioritise clinical post for general practice staff, directing relevant items to team clinicians. You will extract essential information from clinical letters for coding and update patient notes. Responsibilities include arranging appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-ups, while also preparing patients for consultations by taking brief histories and basic clinical measurements, such as blood pressure and pulse. You'll conduct diagnostic tests, including urine dipping, ECGs, phlebotomy, and blood pressure readings. You will complete non-clinical forms (e.g., insurance, mortgage, benefits agency) for GP approval and assist with immunisations and wound care. Providing clear explanations of treatment procedures to patients is key, as is supporting GPs by liaising with external agencies, including on-call doctors, or arranging hospital admissions. Additionally, you will communicate effectively with patients, carers, and healthcare professionals, adapting to various methods like email or phone. You will apply practice policies and contribute to discussions on quality improvements, participate in audits and performance reviews, and keep updated with relevant training, particularly in infection control and health and safety policies.
