Job summary

Healthcare Assistants make a valuable contribution to the delivery of high-quality healthcare. They support clinical staff with the provision of nursing services, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the patient population.

The role is for 25-30 hours per week over 4 days. Working hours will be between 8.30am and 7.30pm.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual who can provide a safe, high standard of care with compassion and sensitivity. The successful candidate will assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis. The ability to communicate effectively and work under pressure is essential.

Greenhead Family Doctors is a small, friendly practice providing care to approximately 2440 patients. The practice has a varied demographic and is located close to the town centre of Huddersfield with excellent transport links to surrounding areas.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks.

a. Undertake new patient health checks

b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately

d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

e. Undertake wound care, dressings, suture/staple removal and other clinical tasks as required

f. Carry out initial annual reviews for patients with long term conditions

g. Assist the clinical team with Mental Health and Learning Disability Health reviews

h. Carry out BMI checks as directed

i. Act as a chaperone as required

j. Venepuncture

k. Administer flu and pneumonia vaccinations

l. Administer B12 vaccinations

m. Carry out ECGs as requested

n. Carry out Spirometry testing (when trained)

o. Support the administrative and clinical team with QOF work

p. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

q. Provide support during minor operations as required

r. Monitor clinical stock and alert the practice manager when orders need to be placed

s. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

t. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

u. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

v. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Essential

  • GCSE Grade A - C in English and Maths
  • Healthcare Qualification (Level 3 or 4)
  • Phlebotomy Certification
  • Vaccination Certification
  • Wound Care Certification

Desirable

  • Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate

  • Experience of working with the general public
