Main duties of the job

As a Practice Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing routine nursing care and chronic disease management (e.g. asthma, diabetes, hypertension)

  • Running immunisation and vaccination clinics (including childhood and travel vaccines)

  • Conducting cervical smear tests and sexual health screening

  • Assisting with wound care, dressings, and removal of sutures

  • Supporting health promotion and lifestyle advice

  • Working closely with GPs and the wider clinical team to ensure coordinated, holistic care

Job Summary

The Practice Nurse is a vital member of the primary care team, delivering high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients across a wide range of clinical areas. This includes health promotion, disease prevention, screening, and the management of long-term conditions. The role involves working autonomously and collaboratively as part of a supportive and dynamic clinical team.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Care
  • Conduct chronic disease management clinics (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension)

  • Provide routine and travel immunisations, childhood vaccinations, and flu clinics

  • Undertake cervical cytology screening (smear tests)

  • Perform wound care, dressings, removal of sutures/clips, and compression therapy

  • Provide family planning, sexual health advice, and contraception services (if trained)

  • Support NHS health checks and lifestyle advice for smoking cessation, diet, and physical activity

  • Conduct blood pressure monitoring, and urinalysis

  • Administer injections (e.g. B12, Depo-Provera, vaccines)

Administrative & Professional
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records using clinical IT systems (e.g. EMIS/SystmOne)

  • Participate in audits, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Ensure infection control and cold chain protocols are followed

  • Maintain personal CPD in line with NMC requirements and current clinical guidelines

  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and care pathways

  • Supervise or support HCAs where appropriate

Team & Communication
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, ANPs, HCAs, admin staff, and other healthcare professionals

  • Participate in clinical team meetings, MDTs, and practice reviews
