Job summary

Dr R K Arora is a well-organised and long-established GP Practice based in the modern and spacious Lyng Centre in West Bromwich. We have an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and supportive team.

You will need to be qualified to at least NVQ level 3/BTEC and have current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), with excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team. You will work alongside our Clinical Pharmacist and GPs to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and efficient systems for repeat prescribing, medicines optimisation, reducing medicines waste and maximising patient outcomes.

All levels of experience are welcome to apply and applications for both full time or part time work will be considered.

The ideal start date is November 2024 but we are willing to wait a bit longer if the right candidate is found.

Main duties of the job

You will be an integral part of the our team, working within your professional boundaries in the practice.

Our GPs and Clinical Pharmacist will always be there to give you supervision and you will provide technical and administrative support to the clinicians and reception/administrative staff to ensure a safe and smooth process from the patient requesting medication to it being prescribed

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Practice Pharmacy Technician:

-Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team whilst in a supporting function to the GPs, clinical pharmacists and other clinicians within agreed prescribing standard operating procedures

-Support the clinicians and reception/admin staff as the point of contact for all medicines related matters, responding to queries from medical and nursing colleagues and from patients, relatives or carers both face to face, over the telephone or remote models of consultation

-Process repeat medication requests, including the conversion of acute requests to repeat medicines, changing quantities of medicines and to increase the uptake of repeat dispensing

-Issue prescriptions in line with agreed clinical protocols and within your competency

-To encourage cost-effective prescribing as recommended by CCG Medicines Management Team

-Undertake medicines reconciliation post discharge and on other transfers of care

-To update and maintain accurate and timely patient medication records on the practice clinical system, including advice given and action taken

-Liaise with secondary and primary care colleagues to ensure correct medicines are continued following the transfer of care

-Monitor practice adherence to the prescribing policy

-Support in the delivery of QOF and other quality or cost effectiveness initiatives

-Implement and embed a robust repeat prescribing system for use across all practices

-Ensure appropriate supervision of safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs

-Apply infection-control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines

-Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements

-Promote safe use of medication, reporting of medicines related incidents and pro-actively preventing safeguarding incidents.

-Participate in the management of patient complaints when requested to do so and participate in the identification of any necessary learning brought about through incidents and near-miss events

-Actively signpost patients to the correct healthcare professional

-Encourage and help patients to sign up to order medication online

-Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance

-Contribute to public health campaigns (e.g. flu clinics) through advice or direct care

-Education & Training

-Provide training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines, the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and repeat dispensing

-Support the clinical pharmacist and GPs in improving the quality and effectiveness of prescribing through clinical audit and education to improve performance against NICE standards, and clinical and prescribing guidance

-Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes

-Identify and be proactive in your training needs and development and as agreed with the Partners

-Take part in the appraisal process every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
