The Role of a Practice Nurse in Primary Care

APractice Nurseis a highly skilled and essential member of the primary care team, delivering a wide range of clinical services that support patient health and well-being. They work closely with GPs, Nursing Associates, and Healthcare Assistants to provide preventative care, manage long-term conditions, and deliver essential health services to patients of all ages.

Practice Nursesenhance patient care, reduce GP workload, and contribute significantly to the prevention and early detection of health conditions. Their expertise in chronic disease management, cervical screening, and immunisations ensures that patients receivesafe, effective, and proactive carewithin the community.

Drs Bird & Kassha surgery is a two partner training GP practice based in Crosby and Bootle serving just over 6000 patients. The team is comprised of 2 GP partners, one salaried GP, 2 practice nurses, an ANP and a reception/administration team.

To provide and maintain a high professional standard of nursing care in adherence to all Practice protocols, policies & guidelines, as well as to provide nursing assistance to the GPs and other members of the primary healthcare team. The role of the Practice nurse needs to be flexible in line with the present atmosphere for change within the health service delivery. It is essential that the nurse will work within own level of competency and expand their role in accordance with practice requirements and own scope of practice.

  • Able to demonstrate the ability to put patients and their families and carers at the heart of what you do and recognising different needs by encouraging a spirit of support, integrity, respect and teamwork.
  • Registered Nurse (Part 1. 8. 12 or 15 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register depending on area of practice) or National Certification in area of Practice.
  • Shows pride in the quality of care they provide for patients and learning from successes and setbacks.
  • UK recognised Degree in Nursing relevant to post. E Able to deliver a high standard of care for patients and always striving to improve on what you do through change and innovation.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of an NMC revalidation or equivalent.
  • Post-graduate qualification related to an area of practice.
