Job summary
We are seeking a friendly, organised, and compassionate individual to join our team as a GP Receptionist. As the first point of contact for our patients, you will play a vital role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment while ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the practice.
This is a busy and rewarding role that requires excellent communication skills, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. You will be responsible for managing appointments, handling patient enquiries both face-to-face and over the telephone, and supporting the administrative functions of the practice.
The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and a strong commitment to patient confidentiality, while working collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and the wider practice team to deliver high-quality patient care.
Main duties of the job
Greet patients and visitors in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner.
Answer incoming telephone calls promptly, dealing with enquiries efficiently and directing calls to the appropriate clinician or department.
Book, amend, and cancel appointments in accordance with practice protocols and appointment systems.
Register new patients and update patient information accurately on the clinical system.
Process repeat prescription requests in line with practice procedures.
Receive, record, and distribute incoming mail and electronic correspondence.
Scan, file, and maintain accurate patient records.
Signpost patients to appropriate services, including NHS 111, pharmacies, or other healthcare providers where suitable.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with GDPR and practice policies.
Support clinicians and the wider practice team with administrative tasks as required.
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming reception area.
Provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence and support the wider team as needed.

We are a growing practice serving over 10,000 patients, supported by a forward-thinking and dedicated clinical team. Our team includes five GPs, a Nurse Prescriber, three Practice Nurses (two with specialist expertise in diabetes care), two Healthcare Assistants, a Paramedic, and a Physician Associate.
As a training practice, we regularly host GP Registrars, contributing to the development of future doctors while maintaining high standards of patient care.
