Job summary

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join a large, forward-thinking Practice. We are looking for an enthusiastic, patient centered HCA to join our clinical team providing high standards of patient care.

We are based over two sites very close to each other and we offer a full complement of general practice services. Our team consists of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioner, paramedics and pharmacists which are supported by a fantastic admin team. The nursing team provides a wide range of services, including chronic disease management, wound management, child and adult immunisations and vaccinations, cervical cytology and travel health.

Hours per week and shift pattern to be discussed with the successful applicants but will include some evenings. There is the opportunity to continue or join the NHS pension scheme. Salary will be based on experience and skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of health care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the GP/Nursing teams and other members of the Primary Health Care Team (PHCT)

To perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by the Nurse Manager and Lead GP. Such tasks are listed on the attached Job Description document.

The team at Downend Health Group looks after just under 30,000 patients within two surgery locations located less than one mile apart in South Gloucestershire under a single partnership. We currently have 21 doctors who are fortunate to be working with 4 Paramedics, 4 Clinical Pharmacists and a dedicated team of nurses and healthcare assistants. Main duties and responsibilities of the job

  • Venepuncture / Urine Culture / any other relevant pathological tests;
  • General lifestyle advice including dietary, lifestyle, alcohol and smoking advice;
  • Height and Weight Monitoring
  • New Patient Health Checks / MOTs/ NHS Health Checks;
  • Support-to-Stop Smoking Clinics
  • Investigative Procedures including ECGs, Peak Flow, Spirometry, Urinalysis, BP;
  • Ability to recognise and manage anaphylaxis and CPR according to current UK guidelines;
  • Health Promotion and Motivational Interviewing;
  • Assisting GPs with procedures such as Minor Surgery, Coil Fits/Removals etc.;
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician;
  • Ensure infection control / health and safety guidelines are adhered to;
  • Ability to monitor and manage maintenance of stock and equipment to include refrigeration and emergency equipment, as well as Cold Chain maintenance;
  • Preparation of specimens / blood samples in accordance with training and procedures;
  • Cytology (following specific training);
  • Ear Syringing / Ear Care (following specific training);
  • Injections including B12s, Influenza etc. (under PSDs);
  • Onwards referrals as instructed by other health care professionals.
