Job summary

Heswall & Pensby Group Practice is currently seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and self-motivated Phlebotomist who has a passion for delivering excellent patient care.

We are looking to recruit a Phlebotomist to join our phlebotomy team on a fixed term basis for 6 months. For the right candidate we can offer you:

Main duties of the job

Working under direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and strictly in accordance with specific Practice Guidelines and Protocols, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from both child and adult patients within our Primary Care Network boundary. These patients will be identified as the result of a direct referral from Clinical Professional either employed by the Practice, within the PCN or based within both the Community and Secondary Care sectors.

This role will be required to perform both on-site and domiciliary clinics for both general venepuncture procedure and also for obtaining blood sample collection for INR monitoring.

As a Phlebotomist, this role will also be responsible for assisting with the in-house training of new phlebotomy staff and also the stock management of all supplies relating to Phlebotomy.

We are a large practice that serves the population of Heswall and its surrounding areas with a current list size of approximately 17000. Our premises were purpose built in 2014 to provide bright and comfortable surroundings in which a comprehensive range of health services can be offered, including minor operations.

Our team consists of 14 GPs, 2 ANPs, and a team of practice nurses supported by a skilled group of auxiliary, administrative and reception staff. We have a progressive attitude andare a very forward-thinking surgery with a passion for delivering excellent patient care, are always looking for new ways to work innovatively and efficiently.

  • Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures.

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.

  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers.

  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.

  • Checking patient identification against clinician request and confirming with patient whenever possible.

  • Recording of collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with Practice Procedure.

  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.

  • Ensuring that INR readings are given to the relevant clinician for processing in a timely fashion.

  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.

  • Notifying a clinician of any significant patient issues.

  • Maintaining phlebotomy stock supplies which includes, but is not limited to, stock room organisation, stock rotation and ordering of new supplies where necessary.

  • Liaising with, and assisting, members of the nurse and administrative teams.

  • To assist with the training of new Phlebotomy staff.

  • Active observation of current working practices across the Practice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed and weakness/training needs are identified, escalating issues as appropriate.

  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manage those risks across clinical and patient process.

  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills, initiate and manage the training of others across the full range of phlebotomy.

  • Safe management of sharps procedures, including: training, use, storage and disposal.

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial/corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management.

  • Keeping own work areas and general/patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards/risks in relation to other work areas within the Practice.
