Lambourn Surgery

Sessional GP

The closing date is 10 October 2025

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a rural practice operating within the West Berkshire Rural PCN.

We are looking for a new doctor to join our team. Ideally, we are looking to recruit 4 sessions working every Thursday and either Tuesday or Wednesday as the other day. We can be flexible for the right candidate.

Our sessional doctors form an integral part of our practice team and actively take part in clinical meetings and full staff meetings, feeding back ideas for improvement and change to the leadership team.

We have 3 clinical partners, all of whom have been at the surgery for a number of years. The Senior partner has been here since 2005. The practice manager is also a partner, taking care of the business elements of the partnership and has been at the surgery since 2007.

But don't just take our word for it! Here are some words from a current GP at Lambourn Surgery:

"I absolutely love working at Lambourn surgery, there is such a friendly and supportive atmosphere amongst staff, everyone is very approachable, and you always feel listened to. We have daily coffee meetings which are such a good way to catch up with colleagues and discuss any tricky cases and contribute to the cohesion of the team, there are also regular clinical meetings which I find invaluable for sharing ideas and learning. There is a good mix of patient demographics which makes each day varied and interesting. I wouldnt want to work anywhere else!"

We welcome informal visits.

Main duties of the job

As a doctor at Lambourn surgery the clinical workload is shared fairly according to session commitment and by holding a patient list. We would ask that one of your sessions is a duty session, and that would normally be on a regular day, morning or afternoon as agreed on joining. It would only change by prior agreement if holiday cover is needed.

We see a patient list of 14 in the morning and 13 in the afternoon, with a share of extras if needed to cover peak demands. We have an experienced ANP and Nurse Practitioner to help with on the day demand.

We do cover extended hours on a rotating basis with the PCN and by negotiation you would be part of that commitment. We only open 1 in 4 Saturdays and all doctors take part so the burden is greatly reduced.

About us

We are a friendly inclusive practice with a low staff turnover. We have an above average feedback from our patients on the service we provide and are a close knit sociable team.

Lambourn Surgery is in an area of outstanding natural beauty in a semi rural location. We serve a population of 6500 patients. Due to the rural nature of the practice we also dispense to 3000 of our patients. The village has a wide demographic and is famed for its horse racing which is evident as you drive over the downs to reach us. We are within 20 minutes drive of Swindon and Newbury and only 10 minutes from junctions 14 and 15 of the M4.

The entire team is very approachable and supportive of each other. We have regular staff outings and events, and hold regular team meetings to capture feedback and ensure all staff feel included in any major decisions around the running of the surgery.
