Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Healthcare Assistant to join our busy nursing team. This is an exciting time for the practice and the successful candidate will have a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills. Full training will be given where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

The role will suit a compassionate and enthusiastic individual. The successful candidate will help us to provide a wide range of clinical services including phlebotomy, health checks and vaccinations. The Healthcare Assistant role is vital in supporting the nursing team and patient care as a whole. The postholder will either already hold or be prepared to complete the Care Certificate, which is a mandatory requirement for this role. 

About us

Due to the rapid growth of our practice we are seeking to recruit a new Healthcare Assistant working 4 to 6 sessions per week.

We have doubled in size over the last 6 years and now have a practice population of over 8500 patients. As a CQC-rated Outstanding practice we strive to offer the best possible levels of care. This was evidenced by the latest GP Patient Survey 2021 which placed us in the top 1.3% practices in England.

Southam is a beautiful market town based in South Warwickshire, only 10 minutes drive from Leamington Spa and 20 minutes from Coventry and Banbury.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care, including:

· Phlebotomy

· Blood pressure monitoring

· Height and weight monitoring (incl BMI)

· New patient health checks including measuring height, weight and dip-testing urine samples

· NHS Health Checks including testing blood glucose and cholesterol levels

· Flu vaccinations (under PSD)

· Spirometry

· Chaperoning duties

· Checking emergency equipment (defibrillator, oxygen and emergency box)

· Checking medical equipment

· Cleaning blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes

· Wound care including dressings, suture and staple removal

· Injections including B12, Shingles, pneumonia (under PSD)

· INR testing

· Minor op set up

· Ordering supplies from pathology lab (including equipment for blood, urine and stool tests)

· Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients’ health and well-being

· Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual

· Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted

· Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths or equivalent

Desirable

  • Care Certificate or equivalent

  • Immunisation and Vaccination accredited

  • Experience working within a GP Practice
  • Health and Safety Awareness
  • Basic first aid knowledge
