Job summary

This is a developmental role, which enables the successful candidate to undertake a work-based and academic training programme to gain the skills and experience necessary to become a Nursing Associate.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the two-year Level 4-5 Foundation Degree – Nursing Associate programme with Huddersfield University. This will involve 30 hours of in-post training across various clinical specialisms plus 7.5 hours protected study time per week (study time will include stipulated days in university and self-study time). They will receive training and supervision from the Nursing Lead and support from our large, collegiate clinical team.

On qualification as a Nursing Associate, the successful candidate will be eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (“NMC”).

About us

The Valleys Primary Care Network (“PCN”) is a collaborative team of six GP Practices covering the Colne Valley and Holme Valley area and caring for approximately 50,000 patients. We are looking for a Trainee Nurse Associate to join our team and contribute to the provision of high standard services to our patient community.

The successful candidate will be employed by the PCN to work primarily from Elmwood Family Doctors, which is located in Elmwood Health Centre, Holmfirth. They may also be asked to work in our other Practices in Holmfirth, Honley, Marsden, Meltham and Slaithwaite.

Elmwood Family Doctors is a large, modern GP Practice providing a wide range of services to approximately 15,000 patients including minor surgery and family planning, plus nurse-led clinics including: chronic disease reviews (e.g. diabetes, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, respiratory); health checks; travel and vaccinations; phlebotomy and ECG’s.

Education and Development

As this is a developmental role, the successful candidate will be required to devote their time and attention to their education and development in role. This will include undertaking all mandatory training and attending all required study sessions, working under the guidance of clinical and educational supervisors, taking part in regular personal development and appraisal discussions, completing modules and course assessments within deadlines, and complying with course regulations.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will develop their clinical competence through workplace training, placements and through the University programme. They will become able to work with reduced levels of supervision and to deliver care independently within set parameters and with access to clinical and care advice where needed.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will undertake the role of Trainee Nurse Associate under the direction of a registered nurse and work with the clinical team to provide high-quality, holistic, compassionate, and patient-centered care with a focus on promoting good health and independence.

The main duties of the role include:

· Carry out specific delegated clinical and care tasks to a high standard under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse.

· Record patient interventions carried out within the patient’s nursing record. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient health records and ensure clinical data is appropriately recorded.

· Perform and record patient checks and report findings to the registered nurse on duty (e.g. temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, blood glucose, urine tests).

· Undertake wound care and dressings.

· Administer vaccinations, ECGs, and venepuncture.

· Prepare and maintain environments for clinical procedures, prepare trolleys for specific procedures and provide assistance with minor operations and vasectomy clinics.

· Develop knowledge of medications and medication administration practices. Ensure safe storage and stock control of medications.

· Chaperone patients and ensure appropriate support. Actively support and assist in alleviating distress and anxiety of patients and carers.

· Care for patients with dementia, mental health conditions and learning difficulties.

· Promote health and wellbeing to all patients, for example, undertaking NHS health checks and signposting patients to personalised care colleagues and local community and voluntary sector services.

· To contribute to public health campaigns (e.g., COVID-19/flu clinics/cervical screening) through advice or direct care.
