Main duties of the job

This is an exciting role in General Practice combining patient-facing, analytical and administrative elements of work. Working alongside a clinical pharmacist, the post-holder will help patients to get the best from their medicines by communicating medication changes to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescribing processes in General Practice, including promotion of repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines.

The successful candidate will be supported in terms of learning and professional development through regular access to a clinical supervisor, other Practice staff and through regular Practice team meetings on a variety of topics.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Support the surgery multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient medicines optimisation processes are being followed.
  • Streamline general prescription requests and work the reception teams, so as to allow GPs and clinical pharmacists to review the more clinically complex requests.
  • Assist patients with responses to medication queries
  • Provide training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation and increased use of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).
  • Promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) and online ordering as appropriate to patient and practice needs.
  • Implement efficient ordering and return processes and reduce medication wastage, liaising with patients as needed.
  • Support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance within GP practices, care homes and other primary care settings.
  • Help to organise and run various systems for the delivery of QOF and locally commissioned enhanced services.
  • Review and develop policies in line with CQC compliance.
  • Develop relationships with other pharmacy professionals and members of the multi-disciplinary team including primary care, community pharmacy, secondary care and mental health.
  • Contribute to the delivery of effective daily processes for the transfer of care between hospitals and GPs including effective signposting, record updates and relate communication.
  • Through the use of audit and action planning, help to tackle health inequalities.
  • Undertake the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional registration with GPhC
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences
  • Evidence of continued professional development (CPD)
  • Experience of working as a qualified, registered pharmacy technician in primary care, community, or hospital pharmacy
  • Good clinical pharmacy knowledge including terminology
  • Computer literate (MS office packages)
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to adjust to suit the audience
  • Strong understanding of data protection and confidentiality
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Be willing to commit to/have already completed the CPPE pathway
