Job summary

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Health Care Assistant to join our Nursing and HCA team at Sutton Coldfield Group Practice (SCGP).

HCA experience in Primary Care is desirable. We would consider candidates who have no HCA experience who can demonstrate a knowledge and enthusiasm for the role. The right candidate would need to have good interpersonal skills, work well within a team and be motivated to develop new skills in a supportive environment.

If upon you joining SCGP, you are currently a patient at one of the SCGP practices, you will be asked to transfer to a different practice. During your probation, unless there is no other alternative available for you, you will be expected to transfer to another practice to ensure that you are not treated by a colleague.

Applicant must show evidence of Covid vaccinations ( preferably including booster jab), and immunity to Hep B and Measles.

COVID-19 considerations:

All staff are expected to wear PPE appropriate to their role and conform to current government, NHS and business guidelines in place regarding lateral flow tests, wearing masks, hand hygiene, social distancing and ventilation etc.

Must be able to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. This may include weekend working.

Additional hours are also available (up to full time hours)

Main duties of the job

Working under the guidance and supervision of the Practice Nurses, you will undertake your own clinics including wound management, ECGs, phlebotomy, aspects of chronic disease monitoring and health prevention and administer vaccinations according to training and clinical competence. You will also have the opportunity to assist with minor surgery and contraception clinics. SCGP is a forward-thinking Practice and we encourage and support development of our staff and our Nursing team includes a Nursing Associate and a Trainee Nurse Associate.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary

Working under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder undertakes tasks and duties delegated by the nurse team leader or other suitably qualifies clinical professional. The Health Care Assistant will not undertake any procedure or responsibility until assessed as competent to do so.

Key Responsibilities

Check patients identification against GP records and confirm details with the patient.

Phlebotomy

New Patient Medicals and NHS Health Checks

Take physiological measurements from patients including blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height, weight (body mass index), urinalysis and ECG.

Administer B12 injections, flu and pneumonia vaccinations, shingles vaccinations under Patient Specific Directions and maintaining cold chain policy with accurate monitoring and recording.

Chaperoning

Undertake suture and clip removal, change dressings and carry out other tasks for which you have received appropriate training.

Fit 24 hour BP machines as directed and in accordance with training and procedure.

Assist GPs undertaking minor surgery.

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient interventions.

Clearing and restocking of consulting/treatment rooms, including timely order of stock items under your control.

Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being by participating in patient health promotion and screening initiatives.

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients within own competence.

Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of the clinical team.

Notify the GP of any significant patient issues including safeguarding.

Ensure full and accurate recording in the patients computerised records.

Carry out administrative tasks and stock takes as directed by senior members of the practice team.

Undertake specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual.
