Job summary
This Healthcare Assistant position sits within the nursing team and is based across all sites.
To assist the medical and nursing personnel in the care of practice patients as a key member of the practice nursing team. To ensure that enquiries from patients are efficiently and courteously handled to the mutual satisfaction of the partners and patients and to portray the practice in the highest possible professional basis.
In addition, the post holder will support the multi-disciplinary team, providing support as required, in line with the needs of the organisation. The post holder will also support the management team in promoting ED&I, SHEF, Quality & CI, Confidentiality, Collaborative Working, Service Delivery, Learning and Development and carry out other duties as directed by the management team.
Main duties of the job
Primary Responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.
- To provide auxiliary nursing treatments to patients in accordance with agreed protocols and under the guidance of the general practitioners and nursing team.
- Providing a phlebotomy service to patients.
- Undertake diabetes screening appointments with patients including foot checks and to make referrals to podiatry where appropriate.
- Undertake NHS Health Checks as well as taking routine BPs, heights, weights, BMI and recording appropriately.
- Undertake MOT and new patient health checks.
- Administration of routine B12s and flu vaccines in accordance with PSDs
- Suture removal
- Follow up dressings and wound care.
- Testing, dealing with and recording of patient samples eg urine, sputum etc.
- Assist in minor surgery clinic.
- Assist in coil clinic.
- Undertake responsibility for ordering clinical supplies.
- Ensure e-mails and patient tasks are dealt with appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Provide lifestyle advice and onward referral if appropriate eg smoking cessation, weight management, exercise.
When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurses
About us
We are a large cohesive team serving a population of 25,000 over 3 sites. We have a team of 20 doctors, 7 nurses, 1 nursing assistant, 2 healthcare assistants and a phlebotomist. The nursing team has an overall lead and meets regularly as a nursing team as well as meeting with the whole clinical team. All opinions of team members are heard and valued with a view to help shape the service we provide.
We strive to provide high quality patient care. To that end we often have regular educational opportunities at the practice, group and personal level. This includes opportunities to share good practice and reflect on personal and patient needs.
We are passionate about supporting and developing the while team and whilst we work hard we are careful to support one another and have done work on wellbeing for the whole practice team. We believe that effective and open communication is paramount and promote this where possible.
