Come and join our lovely team at our Cleveland Practice in Gainsborough as a Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly, forward-thinking team.

As an HCA you will play a crucial role within our GP Practice team, contributing to the delivery of comprehensive NHS Primary Medical Services. Collaborating with our approachable and patient-centric clinical and management teams, you'll serve as a vital support, ensuring the highest level of care for all our patients. The role demands autonomy, coupled with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality, sensitivity, discretion, empathy, and tact in your responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for performing specific clinical tasks under the guidance of the clinical team. Additionally, you will assist with some administrative duties and serve as a chaperone when the GPs require it. All tasks will be completed according to the Practice Protocols.

We are looking to hire a Healthcare assistant to work 37.5 hours between Monday to Friday.

POST MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To work alongside the clinicians in the provision of patient care. To undertake and record the following tasks:

  • Long-term condition management
  • Measurement of height and weight
  • Urinalysis
  • Measurement of blood pressure, temperature, and pulse
  • Peak flow measurements
  • Recording of ECGs
  • Ear irrigation
  • Annual reviews
  • Venepuncture
  • Seasonal immunisations

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.

Key Responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Undertake new patient health checks

Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately

Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required

Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics

Carry out BMI checks as directed

Act as a chaperone as required

When trained, undertake venepuncture

When trained, administer flu vaccinations

When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse

Carry out ECGs as requested

Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

Provide support during minor operations as required

Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Other responsibilities:

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation

Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota

IT Systems:

  • Handle telephone calls professionally.
  • Proficiently use IT systems like SystmOne and AMGP.
  • Handle printers and printing tasks.
  • Utilize IT FAQ to troubleshoot issues when possible.
  • Safely handle plug sockets and eliminate wire hazards.
  • Maintain knowledge of wires/cables and their connections.
  • Utilize various software and systems, including GP TeamNet, PeopleHR, Card Machine, and Labeltrace.
  • Explain and assist patients in accessing online services.
  • Follow protocols and action protocols as required.
  • Utilize the Recall System effectively.
  • Handle emails and manage the generic inbox.

Housekeeping:

  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness in the reception area and workspaces.
  • Keep noticeboards and displayed patient information up to date.
  • Ensure hand sanitizer is available for staff and patients.
  • Clean and maintain medical equipment lent to patients.
  • Record IT problems and contact NHS IT when necessary.
  • Record stock/stationery levels and order supplies as required.
  • Uphold premises health and safety standards and report issues.
  • Ensure building security, including setting alarms and locking rooms.
  • Follow opening and closing procedures.
  • Prepare, stock, and maintain clinical rooms.
  • Adhere to the practice's dress code.
  • Keep mandatory training up to date.
  • Maintain and record the cold chain for incoming vaccines/medications.
