Job summary

The purpose of the GP Assistant role is to work alongside Practice teams to support the smooth running of clinics by performing routine administration and clinical tasks, providing efficient administrative support, and assisting in the processing of patient data. The overall aim of the position is to help reduce the administrative workload pressures of the wider clinical team including the GPs so they can focus their time on the clinical care of their patients.

The role will include in-house competency training development to ensure you are able to undertake the role effectively.

This role could be perfect for an experienced receptionist or administrator looking to make the step up to a role which helps the GPs deliver a more efficient service.

About us

The Practice is run out of a purpose built building in the heart of Bunbury Village and consists of 2 GP Partners, 4 salaried GP's, 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, a Practice Nursing team, Dispensary and Reception team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The GPA will be responsible for overseeing the private medical forms, letters and examinations process within the practice. This may also entail completing basic forms, letters and core elements of some forms for the GPs to approve.

The GPA's job duties may also include sorting clinical post, extracting information from clinical letters and arranging appointments and referrals.

Duties

  • Overseeing the private medical processes within the practice (e.g. doctors' letters, forms and examinations etc.)
  • Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, , benefits agency forms etc.
  • Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions.
  • Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
  • Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes
  • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
  • Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)

Potential roles in the future (not mandatory as part of the application process):

  • Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
  • Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy
  • Support the GP with immunisations/wound care

The role may entail preparing patients for their appointments e.g. performing basic medical procedures such as urine dipstick, taking blood pressure etc.
