Job summary
Health Care Assistant (HCA)
Qualifications:Has no statutory nursing qualification
Training:Trained to KaSPaC or NVQ3 in HSCC
Working accountabilityUnder the supervision of a Registered Nurse, may undertake certain tasks. Works alongside other clinical staff.
Special NoteThis individual cannot interpret results and needs to work to protocols.
Main Responsibilities
Clinical Care
-Work alongside the clinician[s] in the provision of patient care
-Undertake and record the following tasks:
-Follow up wound care and dressing changes
-Removal of sutures and clips
-Administration of Influenza vaccination using a PSD
-Measurement of height and weight
-Urinalysis
-Measurement of blood pressure, temperature and pulse
-Peak flow measurements
-Recording of ECGs
-Additional tasks once specific training has been completed
-Recognise changes in the patients' observations which must be reported and acted on
-Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients
-Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team
-Act as a chaperone
-Appreciate the principles of `Healthy Living.'
-Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients
Main duties of the job
Care and Programme Management
Clearly presents patients' point of view to others
Ensure stock items are ordered and provided in GP & treatment rooms, emergency equipment (Check stock is in date, rotate stock as appropriate)
Maintain clinical equipment efficiently and ensures servicing is undertaken
Follow infection control standards
Change couch curtains Maintain register of dates
Contribute new ideas to improve patient care
Instruct patients in appropriate techniques or tasks
Clinical Practice Leadership
Work effectively in a team
Interact with patients' and colleagues in a professional manner
Clinical Practice Development
Maintain set standards of organisation in treatment rooms/practice
Take appropriate action if standards are not being met
Recognise potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible and reporting to senior members of staff if unable to resolve
General Responsibilities
To help in the Protocol review system
To participate in the Appraisal system
To attend Nurse Meetings
Update patient records using EMIS clinical system
Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful and necessary for professional development. EG Annual Basic Life Support.
