Job summary

We are looking for a practice based Phlebotomist to join our Nursing team for 15 hours per week spread across 3-5 days.

Main duties of the job

Phlebotomists play a key role in patient care by collecting blood samples for testing, ensuring patient comfort and safety, and maintaining accurate records. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, enjoys working with people, and is comfortable in a clinical setting.

Job responsibilities

Reports to:Senior Nurse / Practice Manager / Partners

Job Purpose

To provide a high-quality, safe, and efficient phlebotomy service by collecting blood samples from patients in a professional, timely, and caring manner. The role supports diagnostic and treatment decisions across a range of clinical services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently, following local protocols

  • Identify patients correctly and confirm test requests

  • Label and handle samples accurately and prepare them for transport

  • Respond appropriately to patients who are nervous or have adverse reactions (e.g. fainting)

  • Maintain clean and hygienic work areas in line with infection prevention procedures

Patient Interaction:

  • Treat all patients with dignity, respect, and compassion

  • Provide reassurance and clear explanations of the procedure

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

Record Keeping and Administration:

  • Record procedures and patient information accurately on SystmOne

Teamwork and Communication:

  • Work collaboratively with nurses, doctors, administrative staff, and other associated staff

  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and colleagues

  • Attend team meetings and participate in service improvement initiatives

Health and Safety:

  • Adhere to infection control and health & safety policies

  • Report incidents, sharps injuries, or near misses according to protocols

  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately

Other Duties:

  • Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development

  • Support new or junior staff by demonstrating procedures

Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience in taking venous blood samples
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting (e.g. hospital, GP practice)
  • Experience in dealing with patients aged 16+

Desirable

  • Experience using SystmOne
  • Experience supporting infection control procedures

Qualifications

Essential

  • Phlebotomy training certificate from a recognised provider
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable

  • First aid or basic life support training
  • Additional healthcare-related qualifications
