Job summary

Latham House Medical Practice, one of the UKs largest doctors surgeries, are looking for a Prescription Clerk to join our semi-rural Practice based in the town centre of Melton Mowbray.

Main duties of the job

The Prescriptions Clerk will provide an effective and timely repeat prescription service for all patients of Latham House Medical Practice, liaising with all Practice personnel and external agencies.

As the main contact for enquiries, a good telephone manner, excellent communication and organisational skills are essential. Experience of working with SystmOne (our GP clinical system) is desirable, however full training will be provided to the ideal candidates.

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities are:

Repeat Prescriptions

To provide a 48-hour service for all repeat medication requests by using SystmOne, following the practice protocol for repeat prescribing

To remind registered GPs on timeliness of medicine reviews and act on instructions given

To liaise with all pharmacies, hospitals, primary health care teams, nursing and residential homes as required to fulfil repeat prescriptions requests and alterations (or any other organisation or services from time to time)

To maintain all prescription logs, as required for returns to the Prescription Pricing Authority

To keep up to date with all legislation and changes as required for PPA/FHSA returns

To work with other specialist health providers within Latham House to prepare and provide a repeat prescription service (e.g., drug counsellors)

Acute Prescriptions

To follow the Practice procedures for informing doctors of patients who are requiring an acute prescription and issuing the acute prescription with the appropriate query note.

Administration

To carry out all administrative, call and recall systems identified as being able to be performed through repeat prescription protocols and in conjunction with other team members within the Practice (e.g., drug monitoring)

To update records upon receipt of hospital and clinic letters, medicines use reviews from pharmacists, or online repeat prescription requests any complex queries to be passed to the practice pharmacy team for actioning

To regularly check AccuRx and the dedicated prescriptions email inbox and action requests and queries appropriately

To maintain the smooth running of the department during holidays and sickness absence

To encourage and increase the number of patients who are using the Practices online repeat ordering systems (e.g. Airmid and NHS apps, prescriptions email address, Engage Consult)

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to at least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) and/or a proven level of qualification acquired by experience in a similar role

Knowledge

Desirable

  • Understanding of the NHS and Primary Care Services
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of confidentiality in the workplace/information governance

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of capacity to work successfully both autonomously and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Evidence of experience relating directly to prescribing in any setting (Primary Care, Pharmacy and/or Hospitals)

Skills

Essential

  • Proficient in the use of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and/or SystmOne clinical software
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload
