Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our large, busy yet friendly and supportive team as a Health Care Assistant.

You will join an established nursing team that consists of a Nurse Practitioner, 3 practice nurses and two health care assistants to deliver clinical and administrative duties

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the HCA. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon practice need. This list is not exhaustive:

  • Carry out new patient health checks
  • Carry out NHS health checks, screening and measurements
  • Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
  • Provide a service to promote healthy lifestyles, including for patients with long term conditions, smoking cessation, alcohol use and weight management
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  • Administer the influenza and B12 vaccines, on the instruction of a regulated professional and run flu clinics
  • Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  • Provide education, support and encouragement to patients to self- manage their conditions
  • Act as a chaperone for other clinicians
  • Ensure specimens are checked, recorded and ready for onward transportation
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

Committed and flexible team of 7 GP Partners, 5 Salaried GP's, a pharmacist and a multi-skilled nursing team.

Additional primary care team include First Contact Physiotherapists, further Pharmacists, Mental Health Workers and Social Prescribers

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Undertake patient health checks such as NHS Health check and well woman or well man checks

b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately

d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

e. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics and carryout routine blood tests and diabetic foot checks

f. Carry out BMI checks as directed

g. Act as a chaperone as required

h. Undertake venepuncture

i. Administer flu vaccinations

j. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation. Dip urines are required.

k. Provide support during minor operations, coil fits or implant clinics as required

l. Provide patient advice for smoking cessation

m. Provide weight management advice and refer onwards where appropriate

n. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

o. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

p. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

q. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

  • Healthcare qualification level 3 or 4 or working towards gaining the qualification
  • Phlebotomy

Experience
