Job summary

We are currently advertising for the post of Healthcare Assistant. The prospective applicant will work alongside our very experienced Practice Nurse, Associate Practitioner and the Senior Partner, and will be provided with excellent support and opportunities to develop your professional skills. You will have the opportunity toengage in regular training and will benefit from colleagues' encouragement to develop personal interests in the field.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include:

  • New patient health checks

  • Phlebotomy
  • Urine testing / analysis
  • Blood pressure measurement / monitoring, including 24hr ABPM
  • Height, weight measurement, BMI
  • Lifestyle advice
  • LTC condition reviews
  • QOF call and recall
  • Learning Disability Health Checks
  • Minor ailments (with support from Nurse / GP if needed)
  • Spirometry monitoring
  • Oral glucose tolerance testing
  • Chaperoning
  • Diabetic foot checks
  • Simple wound care and dressings

On the basis of a Patient Specific Direction and with signed authorisation, you will also do:

  • Shingles immunisation
  • Flu immunisation
  • Pneumococcal immunisation
  • Vitamin B injections

Our Practice is comprised of two surgeries, located in South East London, within easy reach of the M25 and good public transport links to London. We have a list of almost 7000 patients of diverse backgrounds and ages. The Practice is committed to delivering high quality patient-focused care for our local population. We are a member of and play an active role in Unity PCN.

We have always achieved highly in QOF activities and received Good for all aspects of our last CQC inspection. We were particularly praised for our excellent staff, management and team ethic.

RESPONSIBLE TO

The HCA is responsible to the Associate Practitioner, thereafter the Lead Practice Nurse and then to the Senior Partner.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The purpose of the post is to support the nurse and doctor teams by undertaking patient care tasks, clinical support tasks, infection control tasks and restocking.

SCOPE OF THE JOB

The HCA will perform tasks prescribed and delegated by the clinical team, working to agreed protocols and within defined competencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Record keeping and administration

  • Make accurate and contemporaneous records of all patient encounters in accordance with practice records guidelines.
  • Contribute to nursing team record keeping (clinical, administrative, Health and Safety related records).
  • Maintain skills in using patient appointment system.

Maintaining a safe clinical environment

General

The HCA will be aware of and comply with the practices Health and Safety Policy. This will include:

  • Adhering to all relevant policies including infection control, cold chain
  • Contributing to keeping the working area and patient areas tidy and free from hazards.
  • Using protective equipment and clothing provided and in accordance with the practices policy.
  • Handling specimens and clinical waste/sharps in accordance with practice policy.

Specific

  • Record fridge temperatures, promptly report temperature variations from standard.
  • Prepare clinical areas between patients in accordance with infection control procedures including cleaning surfaces and equipment
  • Dispose of all clinical waste/sharps in accordance with practices infection control protocol.

Personal development

The HCA will:

  • Undertake training needed to ensure competencies for delivering all responsibilities.
  • Attend and contribute to in-house training events, Practice and Clinical Meetings.
  • Take responsibility for own development including staff appraisals, giving and receiving feedback, performance management with the support and supervision of qualified staff.
  • Undertake regular mandatory training (child protection, vulnerable adults, basic life support, moving and handling etc).

  • - NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care

  • - Experience of working in Primary Care environment
  • - Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant
