Job summary

This is a new exciting role, working for the East Kennet PCN based at Burbage Surgery. Burbage Surgery is a rural surgery serving the population of Burbage and surrounding areas, with a patient list size of nearly 4200. It is a small but very busy practice where everyone helps each other out to meet the varied demands of the patients.

Main duties of the job

This is a relatively new role to the NHS and combines administrative duties and hands on clinical work. The role will support the GPs in the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP, such as taking blood tests and blood pressures and administratively, tasks such as letter processing, receptionist duties, handing medicines to patients.The role will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedure, and under the guidance of the GP.

About us

This role will join a team of GPs and nurses and administrative staff. As the surgery team is relatively small, everyone helps out with a wide range of tasks. This role will work in both the clinical and adminsitrative teams.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Review clinical postal correspondence, undertaking or prioritising actions required by GP or other team members.

Signposting some post to other members of the wider team, eg clinical pharmacist

Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments for patients

Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign, such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.

Ensure patients are prepared for GP appointments, with the relevant history and basic readings being available

Explaining treatment procedures to patients

Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)

Clinical Skills

Undertake tasks for which you have received appropriate training following practice policy and procedures

Make accurate and comprehensive notes in medical records as appropriate

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions and examinations

Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence

Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy

Measure and record physiological measurements in routine presentations

1. blood pressure

2. pulse rate and rhythm

3. standard and 24hr blood pressure

4. standard and 24hr ECG

5. temperature

6. height and weight - body mass index

7. venepuncture

8. INR star

9. Dressings, including leg ulcers

10. B12 injections, flu, pneumonia, shingles, etc

11. Assisting GPs with minor ops

12. Health checks

13. Removal of sutures and clips

14. Diabetic Clinics liaising with Lead Diabetic Nurse

15. Other clinics as defined by the partners

16. Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory

Administrative And Professional Responsibilities

Able to obtain and document informed consent (either verbal or written)

Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes on the clinical computer system as appropriate

To maintain accurate patient records and enter onto the computer using agreed Read Codes

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the Practice

Dealing with telephone enquiries appropriately and according to Practice policy

Able to perform Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation according to current UK guidelines

Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the Practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality

Ability to recognise signs and symptoms of adult or child abuse
