Job summary

The role is to provide healthcare and monitoring for patients in our busy GP Surgery. Patients may have new or ongoing conditions, needing regular blood tests and other checks or may need wound care, dressings, ECGS or injections.

Our healthcare assistant (HCA) would have their own clinics working under the direction and support of the Practice Nurse and doctors.

We have excellent facilities with large well equipped consulting rooms, on site free parking and NHS Pension scheme.

We would consider applications from candidates who are not already HCAs wishing to train in this area.

Main duties of the job

The main duties are to perform blood tests, conduct long term condition clinics and do dressings as part of the clinical care team.

About us

Cookham Medical Centre is in a semi-rural area and has almost 8000 patients. We have 6 doctors (4 partners, 2 salaried) and a Practice Nurse as well as 2 Drs training to be GPs.

We are part of the Maidenhead Primary Care Network (MPCN) and staff from MPCN are based at our surgery as part of the care team. We currently have a pharmacist, a paramedic, a physiotherapist, a social prescriber and a Health Coach with other staff available to our patients at the GP hub at St Marks Hospital.

We are a training practice for GPs and for Physician Associate Trainees from Reading University.

We have a strong and supportive reception, secretarial and admin team.

Job responsibilities

Job summary To support the practice clinical and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.

Primary responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: Note: The staff member will be trained and assessed as competent before being allowed/expected to carry out the tasks specified below.

Perform venepuncture, ordering tests on ICE as per protocols.

Carry out ECGs.

Conduct clinics for the management of chronic diseases - Long Term Condition clinics (LTC reviews)

Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required.

Administer B12 injections under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD) ensuring that this in place either as written or electronic format before proceeding.

Perform warfarin monitoring tests. (INR clinic)

Undertake new patient and NHS health checks.

Collect specimens from collection drop off point, test and where necessary label and send to laboratory for further analysis.

Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, recording findings accurately.

Facilitate routine BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly.

Carry out BMI checks as directed

Act as a chaperone as required.

Administer flu vaccinations under a Patient Specific Direction (PSD) ensuring this in place (written or electronic format) before proceeding.

Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.

Provide support during minor operations/coil fittings as required.

Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared. Ensure fridge temperatures are monitored and fridges cleaned routinely in accordance with guidance.

Ensure sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy.

Maintain a clean and orderly working area and support Practice Nurse and Practice Manager in stock control.

Support team with administration of e-consults and blood pressure records if required.

Keep up to date with NHS Mandatory Training and role specific training.

Secondary responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead.

Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation.
