Job summary

We are looking to recruit a 0.72 FTE Health Care Assistant for 27 hours per week.

This will involve supporting the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

APPLICANTS MUST BE TRAINED IN PHLEBOTOMY.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Undertake new patient health checks

b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately

d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

e. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required

f. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics

g. Carry out BMI checks as directed

h. Act as a chaperone as required

i. Undertake phlebotomy

j. When trained, administer flu vaccinations

k. When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervison of the practice nurse

l. Carry out ECGs as requested

m. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

n. Provide support during minor operations as required

o. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

p. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

q. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy

Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

About us

Oaklands Health Centre is a friendly, dynamic, well-established GMS practice in the historic town of Hythe. We are an ambitious, innovative and forward thinking organisation that provides primary health care to 12,000 patients.

We have a clinical team consisting of 3 GP partners, 1 salaried GP, 5 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 1 Paramedic Practitioner, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 Health Care Assistants, a phlebotomist and a fantastic administration team.

We are the lead practice for our Primary Care Network (PCN) serving a population of approximately 48,000 people, enabling our patients access to Pharmacists, Social Prescriber, First Contact Physiotherapists, Mental Health Practitioner and an Occupational Therapist.

We work closely with the PCN incorporating a team dedicated to the care homes across Hythe & Folkestone and established multi-disciplinary team meetings covering safeguarding, frailty, dementia and palliative care. We also work closely with external organisations such as Age UK and have an active Patient Participation Group.

Oaklands Health Centre is also a vaccination site as part of the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme, which recently received the KALC Community Award for our contribution in the pandemic.

The post attracts 6 weeks annual leave.
