Job summary

Newsome Surgery is a small GP Practice in Huddersfield with approximately 6,000 patients. We are looking to recruit a new medical secretary to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team providing support in a Primary Health Care setting. You will support patients and will always demonstrating a professional disposition.

Some level of secretarial experience is preferred however full training will be provided and therefore NHS experience is not essential, therefore if you have the right skills and characteristics for the role please don't let that hold you off applying.

Main duties of the job

Typing of all manner of letters to patients, hospitals, referrals, private letters and any other word documents that require typing.

You will also be responsible for liaising with patients and other health care providers in regards to referrals and patient care and this could be via written or verbal communication.

Good communication skills and IT are vital for the role.

About us

We are a friendly team and all strive to provide the best possible care and support for our patients. We have a team including GP's, Practice Nurse, Nurse Associate, Healthcare Assistants, reception, administration and secretarial staff.

We are part of Viaduct PCN so also work closely with 6 other GP Practices and through this has access to other services for our patients such as social prescribers, support from in-house pharmacists and first contact practitioners.

We all strive to provide the best possible care for our patients and have a great team ethose to work together to accomplish this.

Job summary:

To provide general secretarial support to the practice manager, doctors and health professionals, involving referral and letter processing.

Job responsibilities:

  • To provide an efficient referral and letter typing and word processing service for GPs and health professionals as required. This includes the typing of letters, reports, patient referrals, minutes and memorandums, etc. in an accurate and quality manner.
  • To assist the practice manager with all clerical and administrative duties.
  • To make appointments, bookings and admissions as required.
  • To chase referrals and appointments as required.
  • To attend meetings and take minutes where required.
  • To establish and maintain filing and administrative systems so that written or computer information is easily accessible and secure.
  • File patient records and correspondence in patient medical records.
  • To receive incoming and initiate outgoing telephone calls in order to facilitate timely and appropriate communications with others, taking messages and dealing with appropriate queries.
  • To maintain the computer clinic system in an accurate and secure manner.
  • To assist with the gathering of statistics and information when required.
  • To provide cover for members of the secretarial team during periods of sickness and annual leave.

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
