Job summary

General Practice Healthcare Assistant

Working strictly within the guidelines and boundaries that are set, referring to the Practice nurse lead or GP for any clinical decisions that are to be made.

Always maintaining a professional attitude towards patients and displaying an understanding and a caring attitude.

Main duties of the job

Duties and responsibilities:

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory

Perform new patient health checks and NHS Health checks

Measuring and recording the following measurements in routine clinics and appointments:

1. Blood pressure

2. Pulse rate and rhythm.

3. Temperature.

4. Height and weight - body mass index.

5. Respiratory rate.

Smoking cessation clinics.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Carry out full chronic illness review for diabetes, COPD and Asthma.

Leading Disability Reviews.

Administer Vaccines such as Influenza, Shingles, Pneumonia, B12 and Whooping Cough under a patient specific direction (psd).

Perform dressing changes according to a nursing care plan, including complex dressings such as packing.

Removal of sutures and clips from surgical and trauma wounds.

Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Practice nurse lead and ensure that sharps bins are ready for collection.

Infection Prevention Control (IPC) audits, hand washing audits, Clinical stocktakes, stock and vaccine ordering,

About us

Addison House Surgery is based in Harlow, Essex, consisting of GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurse and Healthcare Assistants as well as a number of administration staff. They offer a full general practice service and run many clinics for management of chronic diseases along with a wide variety of other medical services such as antenatal and postnatal care and vaccination clinics.

To assist medical personnel in the care of practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. The post will also include some administrative duties.

Duties and responsibilities:

Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes

Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded

Ensure appropriate items of service claims are made accurately, reporting any problems to the practice administrator

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports

Attend and participate in practice meetings as required

Assist in formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy

Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms

To create and send recall letters for clinics

To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign
